The New York Jets got the running back help they needed Monday, acquiring Lee Suggs from the Cleveland Browns in exchange for defensive back Derrick Strait. With Curtis Martin on the physically-unable-to-perform list because of a lingering knee injury, the Jets were desperate to get another back on the roster. Derrick Blaylock and Cedric Houston were taking most of the plays at running back, but neither is the type of player who can shoulder the entire rushing load.

.......

Strait was a third-round pick in 2004 but has been a backup in his two NFL seasons. During camp, he moved over to safety in the absence of Erik Coleman, out after an appendectomy. Strait had 31 tackles last season, but has yet to notch his first career interception.

"It's a great opportunity for Derrick," said his agent, Michael Lartigue. "They know what kind of player Derrick is. Lee Suggs is a great running back. It's a fresh start, change of scenery for both Derrick and Lee."

Strait will bring some immediate and needed depth at cornerback for the Browns. Daylon McCutcheon recently underwent arthroscopic knee surgery and may not be back in time for the Sept. 10 season opener against New Orleans. Gary Baxter strained his left pectoral muscle on the first play from scrimmage Thursday in the preseason opener in Philadelphia and is expected to be out three to four weeks.

Good change for Derrick. I live in NY where every highly picked athlete (regardless of sport) or free agent is under an intense microscope and ravaged by tens of sports writers on a daily basis.

Derrick never got a fair shot here with the Jets. He was one of the best cover corners in OU history and hopefully with this trade (and with Romeo Crennel - a defensive minded coach like Bob Stoops), he can get a fair chance to show his skills and do well in the NFL. The Jets are going to be bad for the foreseeable future.

Good luck Derrick - we'll be rooting for you !!!!!

HAHA

If that were to happen, I might have to sneak onto the Browns bandwagon.

Wait, is there a Browns bandwagon??

NICE - Perkins, Pool, and now Strait. If the Browns ever decided to aquire a free safety that went to OU, they could potentially have an all OU starting secondary.

Has any team in NFL history ever have a starting secondary comprised of players from the same university/college?

By the way - is Nicholson still with Tampa Bay?

The Bwowns could acquire William Bartee from KC.........I'm sure for next to nothing. He's been nothing but a disappointment here, although he played safety for OU and not CB if memory serves me.

Wow this is awesome. Now I only have to watch about 3 teams this NFL season to watch a bulk of my sooners play.

Browns - Wilson
Pool
Strait
Perkins

Bears - Harris
Dvorchek
Runnels
Bradley

Ravens - Ayodele
Clayton
Cody
Chester
Gregg
Ivy

I think you can tell which NFL teams are going to be really good for the next couple of years.

Trade's off. Suggs failed his physical.

"New York Jets head coach Eric Mangini announced Tuesday that Lee Suggs, who was acquired a day before in a trade with Cleveland, failed his physical. The trade is now void and defensive back Derrick Strait will return to New York.
"In terms of trade, Lee Suggs failed his physical," said Mangini. "Pursuant to any trade that is now void, Derrick Strait will be coming back here today and Lee will return to the Browns. It's just one of those things that happens. We had of a process in place medically to make sure that every player we bring in can be able to perform and it's pretty standard operating procedure."
