Apparently, I found out that my 2nd cousin hacked into the Jenks HS computer system and changed his grades for some of his friends and his pals.

Grade Tampering At Jenks High School
KOTV - 7/24/2006 4:00 PM - Updated: 7/25/2006 11:25 AM

A Jenks Eagle Scout faces a felony charge in connection with a grade tampering scheme.

19-year-old Derek Muegge is charged with two counts of violating the computer crimes act. Investigators say he hacked into Jenks High School's computer database in May, and changed daily class grades for at least six students.

Muegge told Jenks Police he hacked into the computer system from the computer lab on campus. He says he learned how to do it on the Internet. Jenks School spokesperson Tara Thompson: "was where he found the programs and downloaded them into the computer and that allowed him to hack further into our system where he accessed and started changing grades."

Tampering with computer records is a felony.

Muegge's bond is set at $3,000.

So I guess you're expecting a call from the Jenks police any minute now?

Sadly, I haven't made anything up. My life is actually EXTREMELY boring I just fall into a lot of weird *** situations.

He's my 2nd cousin, but I think I've only met him once.

and then he wanted to play some 'new' video games, and accidently hacked into the WOPR! caused a big stink after that. even some general tried to '**** on a spark plug' to stop it. but everything worked out in the end.

Holy hell no. My idea of "roughing it" is staying in a hotel without concierge and valet service.

For somebody who seems reluctant to associate with anybody but upper middle class WASPs you sure know a lot of lowlifes. :D

Like an old weary thing.

It was interesting for a while, but the "Will-ness" kicked in.

In middle school, I changed mine in the teachers grade book. She noticed. I doubt it was a felony back then but I sure got a beating.

the school should also be charged for having sub-standard computer security. WTF are school grades doing on a computer connected to the internet?

how did he get caught?

there is no way in hell the IT team of the school district caught him. They don't spend money on computers, there is ZERO chance they spend money on intrusion detection.

I don't know, but my guess is he probably bragged about it and then they noticed the irregularities.

Presumably the grades on the computers would have to match a physical grade book; teachers still use regular grade books right?

yeah, but once the teacher reports the grade to whoever inputs it into the system, I doubt they audit it after that.

Someone had to brag, or was told on by another student.

Didn't Ferris Bueller pull that same trick in "Wargames" back in the 80's?
