an old friend tells you out of the blue that he has terminal pancreatic cancer with 14 months to live

in 91, i went thru the CID Basic Course - my crime scene instructor was a marine Gunny Sgt (retired as a master gunny).....he is now the SIU director for the company that reinsures our company - he was somewhat instrumental in me getting this job

we were talking today, as we hadnt touched base in close to a year and he says "you havent heard about me?"

no.....

"yeah, i have terminal pancreatic cancer"

its not often that you find me speechless or searching for words...

he's 50....

I'm sad for you and your friend.

"Your Bullzhitting me right?"
or
"Have you gotten a 2nd opinion?"
or
"How much quality life do they say you have?"

I like 12's suggestion...unless he can't drink.

Why on earth couldn't he drink? What's the worst that could happen?

While my father in-law was late in his chemo, his doc asked him what kind of beer he liked. "You mean I can drink?"

The doc laughed... "Well, it isn't like it'll do much more harm."

We laughed about that.

And then he died a couple of weeks later.:(

Maybe he's on some medication that he shouldn't drink with?

Just a thought.

he was a smoker and drinker - i would say fairly heavy on both, and both were contributing factors.....at least according to him

i doubt he's in a "drink to be happy" mood right now......but who knows, he may be boozing it up every nite

I'm sorry, just try to spend some time with him JK or help him if you feel the need. I know if I was in his situation I would want to spend time with my family and friends doing things I enjoy.

That's very true.

Probably a good time just to be around if he needs to talk.

Some folks don't want anyone to solve their problems...just someone who'll listen.

Hang in there JK.

Some situations aren't the best for humor.

My Wife told me that there was no way I could give a Eulogy to my single-life during our Wedding Vows.;)

Also Bad Form I was told.

JK...

Everyday should be a positive one for your friend...

He's blessed to have this time IMO.

How you leave this World is the mark of a Great Man or Woman IMO.

I saw a email today that discussed the "Way of Life" that Charles Schultz (Peanuts - Author) had about life.

A Quiz

1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.

2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.

3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America.

4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.

5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winner for best actor and actress.

6. Name the last decade's worth of World Series
winners.

The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:

1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.

2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.

3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.

4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.

5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.

Easier?

The lesson: The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care .

Maybe he'd like to hear what a difference he made in your life?

Yep.

Show him a good time, no matter what that "good time" might include now. It might not be a big party, or it might. Just be there. See him while he can see you back.
