I had the Lemon Pepper beef the other day. There weren't a ton of veggies (mostly scalions) and it was pretty good.

The Lo Mein noodles are good too.

Their kung pao chicken is really good if you like spicy food. So is the chicken pad thai. I always have them put mushrooms in it instead of tofu. Their veggies seem fresher and crispier than most Asian places, but if you don't want veggies in your food just tell them.

I also like their Japanese chicken salad rolls and their lettuce wraps. A lot of people get those for a meal even though they are appetizers on the menu.

What kind of goober do you gotta be if you don't like "vegetables in chinese food?"

Without veggies, it ain't hardly worth eating son. And typically, chinese veggies are wokked, so they're pretty crispy. You must only eat that Hungry Man Swanson's chinese dinner or something. Geez. I'm gonna start calling you Stanley.

It's a fast-Asian-sit-down place. Made when you order, but none of the dishes take very long to make. You order at the counter, then go find a table and they bring it out to you. It's like the Chipotle of Asian food. P.F. Chang's little brother. Good stuff.

Went to Pei Wei for the first time last Friday. It sucked. Hard. Will never go again. Ever.

Being the shy, demure, and quiet person that I am, I haven't really posted my opinion of Pei Wie here either. I've given them a try twice. Both times in Columbia, MD. I tried the Kung Pao chicken, egg roll, and soup the first time. I tried some Fried noodle dish the second time. The American judge gives them a C- and maybe even a D+. Just not very good.

On a sidenote, I ate at Padthai in Norman for lunch. A very solid B+.

I've eaten there more than once.

I got the hives after eating there once and went back to see if it was from what I thought it was...

The sauce for the lettuce wraps gave me a reaction to the MSG in it.

It must be LOADED with it because I've eaten Asian food all my life and never got the hives. Twice there.

The Lemon Pepper with Shrimp and the Spicy Korean are OK.

I thought Good Eats was more homestyle cooking. I'd've never pegged them to have rice burritos.

How do you compare Pei Wei AND PF Changs to McDonald's? I mean, I can see the Pei Wei bit, but PF Changs isn't at all fast-foody and it's served family style. That's just ludicrous!

I'm glad you enjoyed the Honey Seared. If you're a shrimp fan, try it sometime...I like it even better than the chicken.

Whoever mentioned the thing about the crab wontons is right. Those are tasty too.

Speaking of crab, some of the best crab and "Oklahoma-Style" chinese food in centralish Oklahoma can be found in Shawnee at Sunrise. I love that place.

My favorite Thai meal is the PadThai Authentic Style at PadThai in Norman. Sweet Basil on Main is also a solid Thai food restaurant in Norman.

I thought about this last night. I bet if you took the exact food from Pei Wei and stuck it in a crappy looking hole in the wall restaurant and said it was made by some mom and pop who came over from China on a boat that it would be considered the best restaurant ever.

Pei Wei is average grub. No more, no less. I continue to eat there every once in a while (there's one very convenient to my hotel in Baltimore), but it's really not all that great. It's OK. It fills the vacant place in my gut.

The best thing I've eaten there are the lettuce wraps. Some of their other dishes (padthai for one) have the biggest hunks of rubbery tofu in them I've ever seen. And when there's more rubber than chicken, it ain't very good.

Pei Wei + Chipotle = average white boy ethnic grub

Dean, do you just have to cut and paste those from your food responses document?

Heh. No, I am a food snob - well not really a snob, but someone who can truly appreciate a fine meal. No offense to anyone on this board, but the average Okie has the tastebuds of a slug. If it tastes like McDonald's, then it's goooooood. If it has cheesy sauce then it's goooooood. If it's salty, doesn't contain veggies, and the meat is ground then it's goooood.

I don't comment on places/food I haven't tried - other than to say I haven't tried it. I normally try places a couple times, and always try and order different items from the menu. I also take into account price.

Pei Wei is overpriced (a bowl of soup, lettuce wraps, and an entree will run you well over $20), and the food is, like I said, average. The only Chinese joint that is worse is their parent company, PF Changs. I've had a better meal at PF Changs, but damn they're proud of their sprouts and bamboo shoots.

Mom and pop ethnic food will always be better than any chain. It's rule #1 in the fat boys guide to grubbing.

Most of the chain restaurants are really locally owned franchises, some are better/worse than others just like any other locally owned restaurant. There is something to be said for the consistency of some of them, I have been to many local places where it is great one time and the next time or two you wouldn't feed it to your dog. Some of the Austin "legends" are only legends because they are local, it isn't because the food is exceptional.

We alternate between Pei Wei and a local chain that started here called Firebowl Cafe (locations in Austin and Denver) and another place from Houston that opened up recently with a location near the UT campus called Ming's Cafe. The owner moved to Austin to open it up, so the flavor and consistency of the Montrose location is here, plus he loves motorcycles, so we have a weekly bike night there.

Just because something is mom-n-pop owned doesn't mean that it is automatically good just like if it is a chain doesn't mean that it is automatically bad, they are subject to the same factors of good or crappiness.

I like Pei Wei. It's not amazing, by any means, but it's worth eating every once in a while.

Dean's right, though. It's watered-down generic ethnic food for the white man. In fact, in all the times I've been to Pei Wei, only white people have been eating there. My Asian friends don't count, because they try their hardest to be white.

That's good. My favorite is the Mongorian Beef. Pei Wei puts mushrooms in it where PF Chang's doesn't. The honey seared chicken is a good way to go, too.

My vote: Mongorian Beef by a dog's nose.

yes, Mongolian Beef.
best food on the menu.

The Grand House on Classen is teh awesome. The food is cheaper than Pei Wei yet is way better and they give you a ton of it.

OK, funny story. I just heard my favorite Led Zeppelin song and I remembered a post a long time ago where people were posting the best Zeppelin songs. I wanted to add this on there so I did a search based on the fact that I remembered TopDawg contributing Wonton Song as his favorite. So putting in “Wonton” and “TopDawg” landed me on this thread.

By the way, I downloaded Wonton Song based on your recommendation TD and it sucks. I want my free back! :O

The Rain Song clearly blows Wonton away.

Their fried pot stickers are SOOO good. :)

I went there once on a Saturday night and they were hosting an Asian wedding reception. The wedding DJ was singing off-key in Chinese (I assume) to some electronic synthesizer background music. It was amazing.

Oh, and when we got there, the bride and groom were posing for wedding pictures in the waiting area. It was just the two of them (not the whole wedding party) standing underneath a foo-foo white wedding archway. And after our meal when we were on our way out the door, the bride and groom were still posing for pictures. Must have taken a **** ton of pictures.

Whining about where I'm going out and spending my hard earned $$ to feed my kids' faces doesn't even enter into the realm of reality in my world. It'd only happen once. And while I'm on that topic, who else gets mega-****ed when they see the family in the mexican joint or the chinese joint and the kids all got McDonald's bags? WTF is wrong with those parents?

"Well have you heard little Johnny Mack cry when don't let him get a happy meal??"

And what ****es me off even worse is that the **** in the McDonald's bag is "plain hamburger, no pickles, only ketchup."

I probably haven't done much right in this life, but teaching my kids to eat and enjoy pretty much everything is one of the righter things.

Yup. I love introducing my kids to new food. I took them to Niagara Falls and NYC this summer. We ate Indian food in Canada, rigatoni with vodka sauce in Little Italy and moussaka on the Upper West Side. Nummy nummy nummins. No complaints, they asked me to learn how to make it all so we could have it at home too. If I died tomorrow, the fact that my kids aren't afraid of exotic food is something I would be really proud of.

Given that I do believe there are exceptions to every rule, I will agree with you, JK. It's probably more like 99 percent of the time. :D

Seriously, I have yet to come across a picky eater whose parents weren't to blame. These are the parents who, like Dean pointed out, are letting kids eat McDonalds so they don't have to listen to them whine. Parents who don't want picky eaters have to consistently tell their kids they either eat what's put before them or they don't eat. Complain about it and the kids go to their room. Period. From the time they are babies, they have to consistently praise them for trying new things, and keep reintroducing foods even if they say they don't like them the first time.

Believe me, I have one very willful, stubborn eight-year-old who started out a picky toddler and just 10 minutes ago finished a plate full of spinach. And loved it. He knows I don't **** around when it comes to meal time.

As I got older i just stopped being as picky. Once I got over here, i just let it all go pretty much and will eat almost anything they put in front of me. (no dog soup or cooked grubs though).

oh, and I've never ate at Pei Wei

My nieces will try just about everything. The older one was 4 when she went to New Orleans and was eating crawfish etouffee. Other places she'd order a big salad because that's what she wanted and she'd eat it. The younger one's the same way. She'll order shrimp scampi, a spinach salad or fajitas and eat it.

My nephew on the other hand is strictly a carnivore. He won't eat anything green unless you forcefeed him. Except for okra. That boy can eat the hell out of some okra.

my experience is 50% of the time, since i have two boys that i raised pretty much the same way

you know, human individualism being what it is....some people are just born with taste buds that are overly picky

my oldest son was born in germany and didnt see a mcdonalds until he was WELL over a year old

but there wasnt anything healthy out of a baby food jar that you could get into his mouth - he liked the fruits ok, but veggies? not happening - so you tell me how he got picky when he was born that way - so far as i can tell

it IS possible for people to just not like the same foods you are predisposed to like...i swear you may not believe it, but its true

my youngest son? no discretion - likes just about everything....

Human individualism being what it is... how many picky eaters do you suppose there are in third world countries? None. They can't afford to be picky. Neither can my kids. They don't like what I give them, they don't eat. This approach was based on seeing a whole lot of friends and family members **** up their kids eating habits for life because they let the kids call the shots at meal times. I decided not to let that happen and I've got two very healthy eaters to show for it.
