We're going to put a sprinkler system in. Someone recommended that we get the existing 5/8 in. water meter replaced with a 1 in. meter. It sounds like it would cost several hundy dollars to do this. Sure, it makes sense, but is it necessary?

are you sure your meter doesn't have a pressure regulator? some areas require pressure regulators, so it doesn't matter what size the pipe is.

Yes, size matters for effective sprinkling.

You might check with the water dept where you live. I was just told a couple of weeks ago that it is a good idea to have a seperate meter for your sprinkler system. Something about most of what you pay in your normal bill being for recycling the outgoing water. That some cities will gve you a much reduced rate for sprinkler water because its not being recycled.
Anyway, I don't have a clue about it but the guy installs systems in the Houston area.

Ditto what achiro says...Dekalb county Ga (Atlanta) did that for years until they decided that they were losing too much in "sewer" fees. Then they started tacking on sewer fees to every meter and they didn't tell anyone about it...My folks found out about it when they came home from the summer house in Wisconsin and looked at their bills...

Thanks, guys. I'll look into the separate meter idea.

You might be able to put a pump inline to increase the pressure if thats what you are trying to do.

Just make sure to connect your sprinkler line into your neighbors water line, not yours.

That way, you never have to turn it off!

does anyone have a "gray" water recycling system? Store it in tanks and use for irrigation? It would probably cost $TONS$ for an existing house.

I'm seriously considering having a well drilled this fall. My lot is a little over 1 acre and watering the yard, garden, plants on the porch and trees adds up in a hurry.

I was serious. I have a well and love it. The water is fantastic.

Well, they start tomorrow. I figure I'll either lose cable or electricity with all the lines that are apparently buried in our backyard, so I may not be online for a while. The gas line they couldn't find worries me a little too! Hopefully, it'll be okay. Thanks, everyone.

They cut the cable. I had to temporarily fix it, 'cuz they had no idea and Cox can't come until tomorrow. They're paying for the repair.

Check your water pressure. Hardware stores have the gauges for about $4.

If you are getting 50 psi or more it will run 3 pretty good size rainbirds. I have a 3/4" water line running into 1/2" pipe and it covers quite a bit of turf.

You can get these at Lowe's for $16 to $35ea.

BTW, the cable carrying the phone carries 90 volts. I didn't know that. I do now!
