it has always been so dumb to me for a team to do this. I just don't see the point. the whole "the name on the front is more important than the name on the back" cliche is old and worn out. it doesn't have a negative affect on a team to have their names on the back. these guys are in college for god's sake.

That's my theory too. But if Murray and Reggie both return kicks we'll have a hard time telling em apart(they both wear 3, and both are roughly the same size)

I remember Syracuse deciding to do this for the '94 opener against us in the Carrier Dome because their coaching staff said it would bring more unity to the team.

Then they lost to Garrick McGee.

Well, I guess you're probably right if you listen to the radio broadcast. Bob Barry will never know who is on the field whether they're wearing #3 or any other number.

Hopefully there are some number changes.

Another trouble number is 6. Johnson and Carter are both about 5-11.

And I'm not talking about just on a radio broadcast. How do we know the PA announcers know which 3 is which? I guess they could have some different looks with what they wear.

Lets think about something guys...in todays college and pro athletics scene, it is all about me me me, its no longer about the team you represent. Stoops has said numerous times that this team acts like it deserves the repuation that those before them have gained, but they havent done anything yet. This is a 8-4 team and they think they are big dogs which is a frickin joke. I think it is a great idea, how do you get across to prima-donnas these days, you take a shot at their ego and make them earn their name on the back of their jerseys. Why do you think in the NFL, rookies dont get names on their helmets or jerseys during training camp, cus they havent earned them yet. I like it, if stoops thinks his boys are to full of themselves, then take it away from them!!!

You can put anything you want on the backs of the custom jerseys. No one could ever prove that you did not buy it for your uncle Peterson or gimpy cousin White.

The criminals that run the NCAA has to say that it is illegal because they themselves do not want to have to pay players to use their names. They are such doodieheads.

Yes of course you can't let two people wearing the same number play on the field at the same time, but I think the point is you can't tell easily which of the two is actually on the field w/o the name on the jersey.

Having said that... stop all your whining people. If coach thinks this will help motivate the team to win us another NC who gives a **** if you can't tell which lineman made that great block to spring AD?

I don't really care about the no name on the back of the jerseys. I honestly don't think Stoops is doing it as a motivating factor though. If they don't have a chip on their shoulder after the last few weeks...they aren't going to get one. I think this team is going to suprise ALOT of people. I think the offensive line is going to be better because they are going to take it personally if anything happens to Thompson. I think it is going to be like the Orange Bowl where the defense rallied around Heupel not winning the Heisman.

AlbqSooner
8/7/2006, 06:25 AM
I think if they take the names off the jerseys and, as one poster said, go somewhat retro, they should take the face masks off so we can see which player is which. It might make the players more aggressive too.

The Oklahoman
NORMAN - Sure, everyone knows No. 28. Most know No. 42. And No. 12 will soon be easily recognizable. As for the rest, better keep a roster handy.

Fans who know their favorite player's number will have a distinct advantage when watching Oklahoma football games this season. Those expecting to figure out who's who by the name on the back of a player's jersey are out of luck.

Story continues below advertisement

OU will wear new Nike-designed jerseys and pants this season -- and while the look is virtually the same, the jerseys are cut different than others OU has worn. The new style would require a smaller name patch on the back, which would require lettering that is more narrow and tightly spaced.

Given that, coupled with coach Bob Stoops' desire to bolster team unity, Sooner players will not have names on the backs of their jerseys this season.

It will mark the first time since 1973 OU won't have surnames on football jerseys. In fact, OU has had the names on the back longer than it has had the "Sooners" name on the front, which came about in 1980.

Although Stoops has decided to not use the name plates, Greg Tipton, OU's director of athletics equipment, has the plates with each player's last name made up and ready to sew on if there is a change. In the past, name plates were rectangular, but the new ones are rounded off on the corners.

However, the facet of OU players' focus being on the team rather than the individual was an integral part of the nameless-look decision according to Stoops.

"It's about maybe being a little less self-centered and little more team-oriented, but that's a very small part of it," he said. "There's a whole lot more that goes into all this than having your name on a jersey. So, we'll see how it works."

Still, a primary factor was not being able to find the right look. The fabric name plates apparently didn't blend in visually. One issue is that the lettering is too small to read on longer names. Another is how the name plates are situated on the jersey when shoulder pads are worn.

Friday, 12 players were asked their preference and all 12 said they hoped that the name plates would be used.

"I've seen them and I think they look pretty good," said defensive back D.J. Wolfe. "They look different, kind like an oval. But I think it looks OK. But if it's about showing we're together as a team then I'm fine without having them. All of us are."

The Nike material, which is called Cordura, is 25 percent lighter than regular jerseys and the breathable fabric keeps players cooler and whisks away sweat. The pants do not have strings at the waist and have a feel similar to paper -- only with elasticity.

"We worked for about two years to get the exact look," Tipton said. "The first jersey (Nike) brought to us in the summer of 2004 we said no. In the summer of 2005 we said no to another one. But in October of '05 they finally had it where we wanted it."

The first two prototypes had too much solid material and not enough mesh on the front. The new ones have solid material on the back where the numbers are located. Also, the size of the numbers on the back weren't to OU's liking on the first model.

"We're a Nike program and one of their premier outlets. But we didn't want to mess with the integrity and look of our uniforms," Tipton said. "You're going to notice on game days that the jerseys are more streamline and have a better look. We've seen them on and the finished product looks good."

Cause the old jerseys really slowed players down a considerable amount. Its BS. Use the old pattern for your new space age material. Problem solved.

I hate it; how are we supposed to keep up with the numbers of approx 100 different guys, counting walk-ons? I support Bob on almost everything, but i think this is stupid and smacks of USC crap

Study names, numbers, recruiting and video footage during the painful off-season like the rest of us do...

It'll be fun to see the idiot Hook 'em's who regularly screw up OUr players' names. By the time they stutter in confusion & look up the name in their guide, the next play will already be over. Touchdown Oklahoma!!!

Heh.

The descriptions sound a lot like the Hurricanes jersies--rounded name plates, weird alien tech material, and the pants. Please don't be *those* pants...they were literally see through once the sweat got going

Finally! Back to the narrow stripes on the pants. Didn't care for the wider ones...

This is such BS.

If it's emphasizing team over individuals, then make a change that would REALLY matter - have the in-game announcer only refer to players by their numbers when calling the plays during the game.

If your team is screwed up enough to need a gimmick like changing the jerseys to eliminate names which are really there for the fans in the first place, your team is too screwed up for such a change to do any good at all.

We don't need names on Jerseys to win National Championships - Just ask any of the Sooners from 1955 or 1956......Believe me back in those days everyone knew Tommy McDonald was number 25 - etc etc...

The look pretty much the same but they were having dificulty with getting the same letters we had before for the names to fit right on the back. It isn't just the team stuff.
