NCAA president Myles Brand told reporters during a Thursday teleconference that he approved of Oklahoma's handling of the situation.

"I have been reading about it in the paper," Brand said. "It is unfortunate that a few student-athletes were involved in some payments which they did not earn. I want to compliment Coach Stoops and the University of Oklahoma in so far that they took immediate action. I believe the rapid response showed integrity."

Brand wouldn't comment on whether the NCAA would investigate the allegations at Oklahoma.

from ESPN's article on Coach Stoops speaking out. Felt it was worth highlighting that the NCAA appears impressed by the integrity of OUr coach and University.

I've often told my kids "Thank you for telling the truth. That showed real character. Now get a switch." I don't know that Brand's statement means a lot. We'll see.

From today's Tulsa World:

Gary Roberts, who has been active in NCAA legislative cases for 20 years as director of the sports law program at Tulane Law School said, "Unless investigators find a direct link between the scheme and the department, the ramifications shouldn't be too serious"

no link...just reading and typing.

what a bizarre response. if you compare our reaction to improper payments with historical actions, our response is extreme. the majority of the time, paying back the money and sitting a game or three are about the most severe punishments that kids in these situations will get. to state that you like it as an NCAA president isn't a good precedent to set.
