The plusses mean they're on your buddy list, and based on who's got them for Beano, I'm guessing the asterisks are people he's flagged to make it easier to check on their posts or something, whether it's someone who he likes to read the posts of, or someone he has to deal with often as a moderator.

By the way, I did a screen capture a little later that, while the overall count was down to 1001, had 326 members online. The list of who's online was ginormous.

I was going to post it, but then I realized it shows who's on my buddy list. Hurt feelings might ensue, and even worse, people I've put on my buddy list and since grown to despise (while forgetting to delete them from the list) might think I still cared about them.

That buddy list thingy sounds a tad gay. I've added no one to my buddy list and to the best of my knowledge I am not on anyone else's list. I may be unpopular, but my hetrosexuality is intact.
