There are differing levels of certainty.

Some admittedly THINK they are right.

Some advise God personally.

I'm thinking that the particular territory of "ALWAYS RIGHT" gets more hilarious when it comes to eating places, movies, vehicles, etc.

You know, the really important stuff.

What SciFi does make sense to you?

Keep in mind that we are talking about a genre that's a little out there in the first place.

NYSooner1355
8/1/2006, 10:46 PM
listen...take this into the "LitW" thread...don't ruin this one with nonsensical bickering...

Frozen Sooner
8/1/2006, 10:53 PM
What SciFi makes sense to me?

The kind without massive plot holes, for one.

Fantastic technology which we don't understand isn't a plot hole. It's a plot device. Fantastic technology which we don't understand that shows up at the end and isn't hinted at at all in the story to solve the protagonist's problems is bad writing.

Similarly, an alien race whose biology is adversely affected by water is a plot device, and could be a good one. An alien race whose biology is adversely affected by water which ends up solving the protagonist's problems is bad writing when It's not hinted at at all before this in the story. It's called deus ex machina. Here's the wikipedia link so you can read about it yourself: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deus_ex_machina . The problem with a deus ex machina is that, as the article correctly states, it offends your suspension of disbelief so greatly that it takes you out of the story. It violates the internal logic of the story-and in the case of Signs it does so even more egregiously because the aliens took absolutely no precautions in dealing with a planet that is darn near covered with this stuff.

Now, see, take The Sixth Sense. The ending to THIS movie was great because it was both unexpected and was internally consistent with the movie's logic. In fact, it was a fantastic ending to a very well-made movie. Unbreakable's ending was the same way, though a bit less surprising.

Frozen Sooner

Much like Buckaroo Bonzai.
A fine feature film. :D

Though I must insist on you using the full name.

sanantoniosooner
8/1/2006, 10:59 PM
The aliens did take precaution.

They attacked areas that mostly had tap water as opposed to large quantities such as lakes and oceans.

I agree that you can take yourself out of a movie if it isn't plausable. But you can also over think something so much that you create a problem where there isn't one, or it's minimal.

Humans harvest in high risk areas all the time. Some die. It's not like there was a "human store" available elsewhere.
