Now Pumpkin... I'm no big defender or ODOTor anything, and I certainly may have been told wrong, but I was under the impression the construction to which you are referring is being financed by the casino. It's been a big pain in the butt the last couple times we've gone to Dallas though, I'll tell you that much.

Anybody driven the new 121W off of I-35? It's pretty sweet, but they are supposed to start the tolls tomorrow and I haven't seen a booth/plaza one...

They've been reconstructing bits of 35 north between Perry and Tonkawa for a year or two now. I make a semi-regular trip to Ponca City and it always annoys the hell out of me.

Well, they don't want to waste money and make two sets of signs now do they. ;)

The Texas Department of Transportation will officially open the State Highway 121 corridor as a toll road starting today and Friday in Lewisville and Coppell. Tolls will be waived until Sept. 1 as a trial offer to the public. Sections of Highway 121 will open from north of Denton Creek to east of Interstate 35E and from west of Hebron Parkway to east of FM2281 (Old Denton Road). Beginning Sept. 1, motorists will be charged electronically on their North Texas Tollway Authority TollTag. The toll road will also read the transportation department's TxTag stickers and the Harris County Toll Road Authority's EZ TAG.

Actually I think it's Sept 1. I was thinking August, but upon further review...

I've been driving it to and from work and it is nice, but the I-35 segment is still pretty tough during rush hour. But like I posted previously, I have not seen any toll booths or plazas anywhere west of 35.

I think you and colley were hypothesizing about the stop lights over near Sandy Lake (GM mall), but I have had no issues at all there.

i just figured they would have kept the temp signs they already had up before putting up the toll signs, or at least covered them

seems i-35 is better just south of hebron, but that 121 on ramp, next to the frankford exit is pure hell

the bush extension from 35 to 635 is greatness

well it continues south down to 183

but in the past, to get to arlington, or even the airport, i'd have to go down 35 (you know how that is thru carrollton/farmers branch)

I wondered, I was going to Arlington from Carrollton yesterday and wasn't sure whether that turned into 183 or not. I chose unwisely.

Yeah that makes a huge difference getting from your area to Arlington. That new section of 360 near the airport is sweet for me. I have to go to Arlington for work occasionally and it's a lot better than the old stretch.

All of these new roads around Dallas are great. However, why do they all have to be tolls? Do Byrd and Stevens have all of the highway construction money earmarked for West Virginia and Alaska for the next 20 years? A new road that is, you know, toll free, would be, like, exciting and all.

On an interview on OU's NPR station, a transportation official said the reason they are constantly having to redo I-35 is the massive amount of clay in the soil. Roads built to last 10 years only last 5 in our soil, due to the water damage (if I remember correctly).

Go us.

if you have a toll tag you will be billed, if you don't have a toll tag, they are sending the bill to your house.

They're all operated by NTTA aren't they?

dunno, but they are just installing cameras along 121 from what I read. No booths, no change takers...

The ones I drive on have the toll tag, but they have a booth you drive through and pay cash if you don't have a tag. I meant the "if you don't have a toll tag" part.

Not currently they are not. That is the reason for the sign that says "No tolls through August 31."

the toll sign on 121 is a different symbol than the ntta symbol.....

The local governments have been considering private operation of 121 as a toll road. They have debated tolls or no tolls. And if tolls, NTTA or a different operator. There is talk of some roads being privately financed with the owner then installing and maintaining the tolls and being in charge of maintenance. I don't know if 121 falls into this category. The government would put up bonds to pay for construction then sell the bond liability to a private owner. Or the private owner could just pay for construction from day 1.

I guess it was your use of a present vs. a future tense verb.
