View Full Version : America's greatest living actor?

stoopified
7/25/2006, 03:35 PM
I was flipping channels the other day and came across an ad for aTNT original movie and it said something about Robert Duval being America's greatest actor. While I respect and admire Duvall as an actor,I think he is not the greatest IMHO.

I started thinking about who I regarded as the greatest American actor.I careful in this to distinguish greatest from favorite. Many names come to mind DeNiro,Hoffman,Newman,Pacino,Spacey,Hanks,,Depp,Ha ckman,Ford,Denzel,Cage,Redford,Nicholson. My conclusion IMHO is the greatest American actor is Tom Hanks. He has proven equally adept at comedy ,drama, action, and any other genre. He is a chameleon who can become any charcter,in any setting,in any time frame. Hanks is my choice, any other opinions?

I might actually go with Robert Duvall on this. He absolutely disappears into every role he's doing, but he's not just taking on an accent or something. It's like he actually trancends himself to become the character.

The other actors you mentioned are also great, but Duvall has been consistently phenomenal in everything he's done.

In my opinion Leonardo DiCaprio is very underrated due to his boyish looks and build. However he has shown great range. His Howard Hughes was compelling. He played Jim Carroll a NYC artist and heroin adict to a T in "The Basketball Diaries". He had the most believable portrayal of a mentally handicaped person I've seen in "Gilbert Grape"

I could vote for Hanks, Duvall, or Norton as the best. Hackman, while great, is like Nicholson, always plays the same role.

However, for Dean's sake I will say that Clint is still my favorite. For all of you Eastwood directed film fans, his next one is coming out in October I believe. It's based on the book Flags of our Fathers and should be out of this world good. I would encourage everyone to read this book before the movie is released this fall.

Of course, Ishtar is kind of a skeleton in his closet...
