So The wife, kid and I are going to spend the weekend in Norman. Wife wants to see the Fred Jones Art Museum, kid wants to see the Sam Noble Museum and I want to see the Switzer Center.

Any other good stuff to do there? Any decent swim beaches on Thunderbird? How about good places to eat (nothing fancy).

TIA

Any decent swim beaches on Thunderbird?Funny, go searching for body parts.

They found feet in there a few months ago and a head the other day.

I've only been to Thunderbird once in my life. I do remember it being a bit nasty.

DEFINITELY go to the Switzer Center. They're not open all the time, so check the hours before you go.

Red Robin is a good place to eat if you have kids.

well, you mentioned all of my suggestions with the museums

Places to eat local to Norman:
Greek House (a MUST if they are open, on the corner of Boyd and Jenkins)
Bison Witches for soup/sammich, similar to Panera but better
PadThai (Jenkins & Lindsey)

I'll think of more later, making me hungry and I'm about to find lunch

Note to self:

STAY AWAY FROM RED ROBIN AT ALL COSTS.

Go to the South Canadian River. Lots of quicksand and under currents if you want to get rid of the kids/wife.

if you have time, check out the Little River Zoo. I really enjoyed it. You get a guided tour and everything, get to pet a lot of the animals. Fun times.

oh, and if you happen to see the model for the fred jones museum, I did that. :D

not sure if they still have it on display or not, it was used before the museum was built so potential donors could see what the hell it was gonna look like

if you peek in thru the doors and stoops happens to be there, he'll let you in. at least he did with my dad and his family anyway. told them to look around for as long as they liked and to make sure the door locked behind them when they left.

Swim in the motel pool.

Finally, you give some good advice. :D
The kid does want to stay in a motel with an outdoor pool.

Flag - you're not helping. ;)

everyone else, thanks. In Flags defense, they really do call it Lake Dirtybird, and no Flag, I have never been to any submarine races at that particular lake. :P

Red Robin is a good place to eat if you enjoy $15.00 burgers.

Fixed.

Is Del Rancho still there with their Steak Sandwich Supreme?

Is Del Rancho still there with their Steak Sandwich Supreme?

Yes, but it is a disgrace to the Del Rancho name.

Definitely go see Sue the Dinosaur at the history museum (now extended until August 20).

If you eat Tex-Mex, go to Tarahumara's across the street from the hospital on Porter. Stay away from any restaurant with the word "Border" in its name.

There are decent movies at the dollar theater (the old Robinson Crossing movies) for some cheap time-killing entertainment for the kids.

Walk (and eat) at Campus Corner. There is alot going on down there these days.

I enjoyed doing the self-guided historical walking tour of the campus, and eating at Pepe's.

Yes, but it is a disgrace to the Del Rancho name.

The best Del Rancho is just off I-35 on Main St. in Moore- not too far out of the way, and depending on where you're coming from it might be on the way.

I haven't eaten at the one in Moore, but the Tahlequah one is pretty good, too.

Any decent swim beaches on Thunderbird?

There are now that the lake is so damn low. There's a new spit of land near the Hog Creek camping area that turned MTV Spring Break on Sunday afternoon, complete with a full volume airing of "Crazy Bitch" by Buck Cherry (and not the radio edit).

The best Del Rancho is a Chuck Wagon. ;)

Well, the little trip to Norman was good.
I took Flag's advice and stayed away from Thunderbird.
I took nobody's advice on where to eat. :D

The Switzer Center was cool. There were 3 or 4 guys running steps in the stadium - and it was hotter than heck out there.

The Fred Jones art museum was very nice, but the most famous painting they have there is on loan to some place in Scotland.

The natural history museum was neat, got to see Sue - but too many damn kids (don't go there on a Saturday).

Perfect Swing Family Fun Center is a rip off...but the kid had fun driving a go-cart.

I think Norman has the most stop lights per capita in the U.S.
