It ain't just the NYT, folks. Remember a few days ago that crazed f*ck stabbed 9 people in a Tennessee grocery store, and some citizen pulled a gun on him to put a stop to the carnage? USA Today rewrites the story to say the citizen "tackled" him, and never mentions the gun (http://www.claytoncramer.com/weblog/2006_07_23_archive.html#115383672278912310).

AP version from ABC News:

A knife-wielding grocery store employee attacked eight co-workers Friday, seriously injuring four before a witness pulled a gun and stopped him, police said...

Cope said he grabbed a 9mm semiautomatic pistol from his pickup truck when he saw the attacker chasing the victim "like something in a serial killer movie."

"When he turned around and saw my pistol, he threw the knife away, put his hands up and got on the ground," Cope told The Associated Press. "He saw my gun and that was pretty much it." .
USA Today version:

The suspect was tackled by a witness as he tried to run from the building and was held until officers arrived, Higgins said. LINK (http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2006-07-21-schnucks_x.htm)
Nope, no agenda there.

You know, whether you favor citizens owning guns or not, having the media just invent their own versions of events is some scary sh*t.

Of course there's no possibility ABC could have gotten the initial story wrong....

Of course there's no possibility ABC could have gotten the initial story wrong....except that ABC and USA today both got the story from the AP, and the AP version includes the gun. and there are a ton of other outlets reporting the story with the gun in it. and how could they have gotten it wrong, exactly? the original AP article, from which USA today claims it got the story, quotes the guy who pulled the gun explaining what happened in detail, including a description of the type of gun used.
