Here's the deal. I'm going to see somebody I haven't seen in a while during the OU-tx weekend.

#1: I want to look as good as possible.

#2: I haven't been in a gym since high school. I'm 32.

#3: I know I'm expecting a miracle, but I have heard of Hollywood stars getting buff in just a couple of months for a movie role.

Any tips? Should I go get a personal trainer? Should I just forget the whole thing and show up with my beer belly?

if you are serious i would get a trainer and get on a very structured diet...or get a trainer to write you up a very structured diet and exercise program and then phase out said trainer

hire a trainer for 2 months.

2 months is about the same length as army basic, and that'll get you in shape. do a few hundred pushups and situps a day, run a couple miles a day, and walk another 5 or 10 miles a day carrying a bunch of stuff on your back. that should pretty much do it. ywia.

If I recall correctly, Soonerboarder is an expert on physical fitness. I'd say try body for life, but I'm the wrong one to get a testimonial from regarding the LIFE part of this. See I was in awesome shape after 2 months, but then Ice Cream kicked my butt again. It was for me, body for month.

Either get a personal trainer or get a heart rate monitor and study up on zone training.

Or do both.

Oh, for a short-term diet which sheds a great deal of weight, you cain't hardly beat Atkins. Sure, it's got its detractors, but it's just dandy for short term weight loss.

Should I really be running slower to keep my heart in Zone 3? I've been running for a while, but my average, over 3 to 5 miles is at the upper end of zone 5. A friend is telling me to slow the heck down. I've tried it a few times, but I'm nearly walking part of the time to keep the rate in Zone 3.

Thoughts?

I meet with a personal trainer on Monday. If everything works out, this will be my last sore-muscle-free weekend for a long time.

Rock climbing is a really good way. Plus, it doesn't feel like work.

Damn it! The personal trainer said that he's going to need a medical release from my doctor. I haven't seen a doctor in over a year! I know that she isn't going to sign off on it until she sees me.

Great. Now I'm going to get another "Your heart and liver are about to explode" lecture.

Oh well. At least this is the most serious I have ever gotten with making a lifestyle change. No, I don't mean that sort of lifestyle change.

that is probably a good sign - maybe he takes his training seriously and you aren't just another buck passing through the door...he also has to watch out for his liability

Ugh. My BP is too high. The doc put on some medicine to lower it.

If the BP is lower in 2 weeks, she'll sign off on it. I guess my lifestyle change will have to wait a bit.

High BP? you? Nahhhh....

;) Keep with it, man. If you feel discouraged, let Dean know and he'll give you something to be discouraged about.

Dude... just do body for life (basically eating small healthy portions 5-7 times a day instead of 3 big meals), get a membership at a local gym, and work out every day but Sunday. Cardio 3-5 times a week until you're about to pass out, and light weights with a lot of reps. That plus a good diet will get you in shape in two months. Once you get started, you'll probably keep it up b/c you'll be surprised how much better you feel overall. Being healthy is awesome once your body gets used to it.
