Crowd spoils 'soft' opening

GOLDSBY - So much for the planned "soft" opening.
Chickasaw Enterprises planned to open the state's largest casino last week with no announcement or fanfare, the theory being management could work out any kinks amid a few customers before an Aug. 10 grand opening.

Word of mouth and one display sign reading "Now Open" spoiled those plans.

When the casino opened at 11:59 p.m. Monday, 2,000 gamblers were lined up outside, all wanting a first crack at Riverwind Casino's 2,200 electronic gambling machines and 71 card tables.

Not that Brian Campbell is complaining.

"It was probably a few more than I was expecting. They were just pouring in," said Campbell, chief executive officer of Chickasaw Enterprises, the business arm of the Chickasaw Nation.

It's definitely open. The traffic is crazy in the evenings. They have an auxillary parking lot just north of Total Truck and Trailer with shuttles to the casino. I can't imagine when it has a "Grand Opening".

Does Cash America sell franchises?

People will eventually run out of stuff to sell, but payday loans are the gift that keeps on giving. :texan:

I wonder if there are laws about those kind of places being near casinos? If not, I'm sure they'd be there already.

yes, the overflow lot has a shuttle bus to take ya over, and the bus drivers will plow over your *** too. not kidding. bussin the blue-haired's must be a stressful, hurried, job.

it opened at midnight last tuesday, and people were LINED UP outside the door at 9:30. There was a countdown up on their big screen as to how many hours/minutes until they opened.

Power went out for about 3 hours Wednesday (I think), and they didn't have their 3 HUGE deisel generators going (must not have had any fuel in that big tank they burried right outside the casino). When we drove by thursday after work ALL 3 generators were huffin and puffin, guess they had another power outage, and fuel this time to cover it.

Another HUGE one is being built just this side of shawnee, along with hotels and such all around it. And they put in a rather large one on the OK/AR border, just before you enter Ft. Smith. It's ALWAYS packed as well. (and there's a pawn shop on one side of it, and a porn shop on the other.....someone beat ya to it)

There is also another casino in Roland just west of Fort Smith on 64 that is run by the Cherokees...and a big developer in Fort Smith (if there is such a thing) leased some land along the Arkansas River (on the Arkansas side)to the Ketowah tribe to build a casino there if he can convince Fort Smith to approve gambling. That would be 3 casinos within about a 10 mile radius!

Casinos don't bother me, but the explosion of these things really does. And already I have a couple of family members who seem to be developing a slight addiction to these places and losing their money.

Its really to bad Oklahoma couldn't have just setup a town for all this and made it a single destination area, instead of having one in every town. Also sad that government and gaming are going to be the states two largest employers.

The few times I've gone to the casino here to pickup tobacco products from the smokeshop, I see a lot of elderly and poor folks go in there and they're the ones that need to waste money and time there the least. when i left, i was up 2 bills playing 1/2 NL hold 'em after about 2 hours. not striking it rich by any means, but not bad for 2 hours of work.

the place is pretty nice, but don't get your hopes up. 95% of the place is made up of those stupid machines (and the type of people that play such machines - which was where i was going with the hillbilly deluxe reference).

the blackjack tables have that stupid .50/hand ante, which means the house has you by about 15% on a $5 bet. there's no way you could get me near one of those tables.

the OTB is nice, but small. unlike the poker area, it isn't non-smoking:mad:.

the poker area is about 1/2 the size it needs to be for the number of tables they're running. i probably won't go back until some of the novelty wears off.

also, there were no omaha tables:mad::mad::mad:.

I thought it was very well decorated, nice and bright, clean, friendly, etc. Not bad at all. Reminded me of a small Vegas casino. No craps, though. :(
