the most amusing comment I heard was this morning on the radio when the guys commented that there was a betting line in England from whether or not Tiger and Faldo would shake hands to 25 to 1 odds that there'd be an alteracation between them on the course. They got to talking about what started the 'beef' between Tiger and Faldo, and one said that today and tomorrow wouldn't matter since Faldo'd be in the booth with Tirico for the weekend anyway. :)

Newbomb Turk

I heard the Tiger/Faldo thing started when Faldo was in the booth. That was back when Tiger was going through his swing change. Faldo was saying Tiger's swing plane was too flat or something like that.

that's pretty much what they were saying on the radio. Faldo was critical of Tiger changing his swing, and had on subsequent events questioned shot selection. Both things that are the kind of thing that can get you blacklisted mediawise with Eldrick.

At dawn, the telephone rings... "Hello, Senor Smith? This is Ernesto, the caretaker at your country house."

"Ah yes, Ernesto. What can I do for you? Is there a problem?"

"Uh...I'm just calling to advise you, Senor, that your parrot died.

"My parrot? Dead? The one that won the International speaking competition?"

"Si, Senor.that's the one."

"Damn! That's a pity! I spent a small fortune on that bird. What did he die from?"

"From eating rotten meat, Senor."

"Rotten meat? Who the hell fed the parrot rotten meat?"

"Nobody, Senor, he ate the meat of your dead horse!"

"Dead horse? What dead horse?!"

"The thoroughbred that won the Breeders Cup, Senor Smith. He died from a heart attack pulling the big water cart."

"Are you insane? What water cart?"

"The one we used to put out the fire, Senor!"

"Good Lord! What fire are you talking about, man?"

"The one at your house, Senor! A candle fell and the curtains caught on fire."

"What the...!! There's electricity at the house!! What the hell was the candle for?"

"For the funeral, Senor."

"WHAT BLOODY FUNERAL?!"

"Your wife's, Senor...She showed up one night out of the blue and I thought she was a thief. So I hit her with your new Tiger Woods Nike driver."

A long pause of complete silence... "Ernesto, if you broke that driver, you're in deep chit!

I think the R&A should just stick with the nine courses that are on the rota.

I disagree. the rota itself is a product of some pretty slimey politics itself and hardly "tradition bound". i'd also say the R&A should play the Open in Ireland at Portrush, Royal COuntry Down, or Ballybunion....all of which are more than legit enough to host the Open and the peer of any links in England or Scotland. However, politics (in the big sense) has been the point of discrimination. I also think St. Andrews should be in the rota on the same rate as the other courses....not given a 2-fer each time through.

i won't even play the "What if?" every poster on this board played Hoylake card.....how much goat track beat down you think you would be dishing out?

the Tour guys get into the 20's under par at about 1/3 of Tour Events....those are the coporate goat tracks with virtually no distinguishing characteristics except pretty water fountains, ridiculous bunkering, goofy nature sounding names, and are nothing more than well manicured, over-watered 7,000 foot advertisements and hubris for the corporate hosts. those courses are the ones that deserve criticism.

That has nothing to do with criticizing a golf course. Every course on tour would kick most of our asses but I think we are allowed an opinion on them. My dislike for links courses is just my personal opinion, I'm allowed that....I think they look like pasture land and for the most part, that's what they are...the area between the sea and the community that isn't fit for agriculture. I just don't happen to like them, that doesn't mean you can't and it doesn't mean that some of them aren't great courses. Hoylake isn't one of them. I don't think the R&A wanted to set up a course where the fairways were faster than the greens and all of the grass was dead. The only thing saving this course at all is the Wednesday night rains.

and many cannot just beg off on the "i don't like color of the grass" argument since it's been hot at Hoylake and in the UK all summer....it's the same every year at sf.com.

i think it has more to do with many people who grew up playing and watching the American Tour (myself included) like to see guys spin the ball and classic target golf dart throwing onto the greens. if you grew up playing the local muni in Oklahoma, it was likely brown and hard in the summer.....and the Club course was green. Target golf, that's how i learned how to play. but, to say that's "better" than the ground game is really not something that can be substantiated in anything more than an opinion....which is fine. but, having an opinion as such doesn't really merit the dengration of that which it is not. as is so often the case.

that's my opinion. i know some of it's in fun and to yank my chain and that's all fun....but i just hate to see so many wallow in ignorance.

what about them? Although Shinecock is a links style course, I don't remember it looking anything like what I am seeing at Liverpool.

I definitely remember at least two of them resembling a 'goat track'

should be interesting tomorrow - we'll see if Sergio can handle being paired with Tiger - especially after the comments he made yesterday about Tiger. I say Sergio wilts like the little baby he is.

Sergio v. Tiger?

How many strokes does Sergio get?

King Crimson
7/22/2006, 03:15 PM
i don't see Garcia having a real chance tomorrow unless he catches fire on the order of a freakshow.

Eldrick has a big advantage as such. he knows someone will post a good score, but it won't be Sergio most likely. who he will be able to stare down every hole.

if ir comes down to "making the big putt" it will be the first for Garcia.

StoopTroup

DiMarco will win it.

no surprise to me that Sergio is playing poorly. Also no surprise that Tiger is playing well.

King Crimson
7/23/2006, 10:56 AM
Eldrick isn't going to be easy to catch with a 3 shot lead at the turn. he's got to think i make one more birdie and don't make double, i win. and with two par 5's to play.

DiMarco making a nice move - I'd like to see him win a major. Don't know if he will be able to catch Tiger today though.

King Crimson
7/23/2006, 11:12 AM
Di Marco was a money guy at the President's Cup and really had Tiger gagging at the Masters year before last......but it's Eldricks tournament to lose at this point.

until someone makes a run, all he has to do is make pars.

woods has backed off his shot twice this hole.

he makes birdie here, it's over. great putt.

Newbomb Turk
7/23/2006, 11:29 AM
Yep - probably over. There are the two par 5's, so anything can happen. But the 5's probably play into Tiger's hand more than Dimarco.

He's really played well when he needed to. DiMarco puts a little pressure on him, and he steps up and birdies two in a row.

i thought dimarco and tiger both were pure class today, both of them handling the loss of a parent in the recent past

i listened to a repeat of a radio show this morning, when i was driving up to OK

they were comparing Tiger to Nicklaus....Jack has 18 majors (Tiger now has 11), but Jack also had 19 2d places......and you've got to figure that a few of those were stolen from him (Trevino, Watson)......thats an incredible number

however I think Tiger plays against a deeper field than Jack did, and I dont know that they "jack proofed" the golf courses like they do with Tiger

its a moot point of course until (or if) Tiger reaches 18 majors....

JohnnyMack

I see where Tigger went driver once all week.

That showed real maturity.

when he starts outthinking everyone else and not just outhitting/outputting everyone else, he'll be really good.

yeah, that's the main reason that arguing between eras is such a moot point. you can't really compare the competition of today to competition to Jack's heydey, to the competition when Snead and Jones ran the golf world.

Hey British Open, its called water, you put it on your fairways and they will be green.

What was up with the little circles of green in the middle of the fairway? I'm assuming it was a sprinkler head but if it was, can they not fix it to water outside of 3 inches?

King Crimson
7/24/2006, 10:13 AM
you can say the field is deeper today, but the technology is also an equalizer. those old guys could swing it. watch the footage of Jones or Byron Nelson those guys are smoove.

you try breaking 80 with persimmon drivers with plastic inserts, stiff steel shafts and balata golf balls. it's regular for Joe Muni to be knocking it around 3 bills off the tee with this generation of drivers but courses were playing plenty long inna day.

and there is no way you are going to convince me that Tom Watson, Lee Trevino, and Arnie were not imaginitive gifted players.
