If I stay on I20 to the West side of FW and then take 820 to the NW side of Fort Worth insteda of taking 20 to 287 to 35 to 820 that I save 20 minutes. It is longer but saves time.

If I pick a job that is 20 miles closer to home, it takes me less time to get there than if it were 20 miles away.
