Tahoe in the Summertime

Any of you hillbillies ever been?

The family and I are flying out of Houston Monday after next and could use a couple of suggestions. We're actually staying with friends in Sacramento. We'll be driving up to the mountains for a couple of days. Enjoying 60° evenings is enough for me, but I'm searching for kiddo activities during the day.

Definitely horseback riding. The Ponderosa is over there too, the kids might like that if they've ever watched Bonanza. You can also go to Carson City, or pan for gold in an old mining town, or take the tram up to Heavenly Valley ski resort. There are a million things to do around there.

They might enjoy the museum in Carson City, the exit is thru a series of mineshafts.

when I was at IAIA in art school, we shared an outdoors club with the College of Santa Fe. I befriended this fella and asked him what he was doing for the summer. He said he and his father were building a log home on Tahoe.

Iv'e been to Southlake Tahoe many times....It's beautiful this time of year. Enjoy.

I thought the whole Ponderosa thing was boring and not worth the drive, unless you are a Bonanaza fanantic. Great golf, gambling, Heavenly lives up to its name (too bad it isn't ski season), boating, hiking, biking, etc. If I recall the water in the lake is always too cold to get in.

I've never thought Tahoe was that great for kids unless they're into hiking. I would picnic at Fallen Leaf Lake and Emerald Bay. Take a ski lift - I'm pretty sure Heavenly operates a lift in the summer. Hiking in Desolation Wilderness is cool - there's a nice little waterfall you can hike to in 45 minutes. You can sail on the lake. It's a bit cold to swim, but my kids swam when they were too young to figure out it was too cold to swim :)

Have fun. It is seriously gorgeous there.

be sure and visit the Sinatra Blackbook Lodge and Casino.

OldBlueSooner, Emerald Bay was wonderful! We hiked all around there. Hiked down to a fairly impressive waterfall. There was a couple of wading pools about 30 feet from the falls that the kids sure enjoyed. At one point, I looked up and saw a woman clinging to a branch in the water, obviously in a panic. The water was only a couple of feet deep, but she wasn't far from the edge of the falls. I got to her quickly, then realized she was also clinging to her dog. After making sure she was ok, I carried her dog to the shore and then helped her out of the water. (Obviously, I would have helped her first, but the dog would have likely gone over... she didn't like that plan.) It wasn't that big of a deal, but she told my daughter I was a hero. I, of course, said, "She's absolutely right, honey."

And then I spent the rest of the day walking around in wet shoes and socks.

Oh, and we didn't do the ski lift thing... $24.00 for adults. I didn't even hear what they said the price for kids was. Southlake was nice, but much too touristy for my taste. We stayed at the Marriott Timber Lodge. Awesome room... not exactly roughing it.

What a great vacation!
