I love thunderstorms..love em. Love the way they sound and the smell right before, all of it...but...

I heard once you were not supposed to take a bath or a shower during a thunderstorm. We have a pretty good one going here and I need to take a shower. Is it safe? Should I wait till it blows over? I can't imagine why it would be dangerous?

Thank her for all of us. :D

OK...well...since there are no warnings...I am going in. Wish me luck.

Yeah my parents told me that when I was a kid. I guess the theory was that lightning would zap a pipe somewhere and it'd travel through the water and I'd get fried in the shower. Somebody should send that in to MythBusters.

you should not do it. if you do (and I have) make it quick.
not really smart though. especially if the lightning is close and often.

during a lightning storm, it's not smart to be in or near standing water. I'll take that advice in the house too.

You should only urinate into freestanding plastic vessels also.

I think Mythbusters showed that you need to be standing on the drain before you can get a lethal hit.

Of course, I've only seen that episode once and it's been a while.

You should never shower during a thunderstorm. Of course, computer use is totally ok.

umm dude, lethal? I don't want a tiny shock, much less burned or waking up in the hospital 5 days later.

and yeah, I always shut down my pc and unplug the powerbase during a good one. vibrating bed is still go though.

Yeah, a good shock could burn off some special equipment.

So NOW you tell me. Well, I survived but now that I read this I won't do it again. We have an old either cast iron or steel tub too...not sure what it is but magnets stick to it...or do they stick to all tubs?

make sure you talk on the phone also while you shower during the thunderstorm.

oh good, now we will be talking about things that stick to a tub.

Oh crap!

Magnets stick to my tub, too! I guess I'm just a lightning rod when I take my monthly shower.

Maybe this could be a poll? Do magnets stick to your tub?

Actually they did this and discovered the indeed it was NOT a myth.
Be Careful.

A friend of mine I worked with in eastern North Carolina once told me that right before a thunderstorm, it smells like hogs.

I'd never notice that before, but I started smelling hogs just before it rained, after that day.

Has anyone mentioned how worthless this thread is without pics?

You've got a much better chance of dying while driving to the grocery store.

Don't worry about it, take a shower. If you happen to get electrocuted and die, just chalk it up to some really bad luck.

Yes, certainly. In the meantime, just keep posting here. While wearing a towel. :texan:

According to Bill Burnett, PhD, OU Meteorology, when lightning is a threat,
don't bathe, shower, swim - even in an indoor pool. Wait until it passes.

He gave an excellent presentation on lightning last summer in the hood,
after two houses burned to the ground after being struck.
