I have a quote from one subcontractor for roughly $175,000. I thought I was getting hosed so I got another quote from a guy I've worked with in the past. The new quote is for roughly $50,000 for the same work.

South Oval You Decide

Do I

a) Call low guy and tell him to take another look at his number to make sure he didn't leave something out.

b) Call low guy and say, hey high guy is over triple your quote.

c) Call low guy and say hey, your number is wayyy to low, add a hundred k you'll still be low and when this is over cut me in on the action.

d) let low guy do it for the $50,000

A, and also get another quote. 3 guys, then find out what's going on.

I knew this guy was going to screw me as he thought he was the only one bidding. The Architect told him that. I had to talk the low guy into doing it as he really didn't want to mess with it.

Get a contract. I did and it saved me from a fate worse than it could have been. The only contractor I ever had dealings with ended up in jail for filing a fraudulent lien on me. They should have thrown his crooked lawyer in there with him.

Mine is far and away the best option.

As much as I'd like to have my car paid off or a nice down payment for a house I don't think jail is worth it.

Stupid morals and ethics.

well, I'm not really saving our company money but by going with D, I'd save the State of Texas roughly $125,000.

Does that affect the answers?

if one day I have to drive over it and it collapses, or, walk through it and it implodes, yes, it does change the answer. :D

A, then D. I also like the suggestion to get a third quote to see which one is correct.

You might want to double-check whether there is a reason why he was the only one bidding (ie, are you stepping on somebody's toes whose toes you should not be stepping on).

A,and get a third bidder, call the first guy and have him check his numbers. Advise him the other bidders are 2/3rds lower, Maybe he needs to rethink it.

I know why he was the only one bidding it. He wasn't supposed to know that he was the only one bidding it but the moron architect told him that he was the only one bidding it.

I think I'm gonna go with option C. The owner was fine with the cost of the high guy so in their minds I'll be saving them money, right?

I'm kidding. I went with option F.

Well, the guberment always seems to go with the low bidder, and we all know how well they build things.
anyone ever heard of "cost overruns"?
