Twice, 8 players

1975, OU, Billy Brooks, Jimbo, Tinker, Dewey, Lee Roy, Mike Vaughn, Little Joe, Terry Webb.

if you go look at soonerstats.com the total D numbers for the 74 and 75 teams (esp. 74) are crazy. forcing like 5+ turnovers per game, avg.

Yes. And I happened to turn the radio over to the animal the other afternoon and Jimbo was on and he told James that the 1972 team, in his opinion, was the best team that he played on while at OU. He also said that when we lost to KU in '75 that he drank A LOT of beer after the game.

Good times. Over the last few years living in Houston and talking college football with others, I'm always asked about the glory years of the OU wishbone and all the points scored, etc. I always tell people that it was the Sooner defense in those years that was a big reason for the success the team enjoyed.

that's the truth. Switzer used to kick the ball when he won the toss. he got what he wanted either way. because he thought his D would get em 3 and out....and take the wind in the 4th Q. and better ball position.....obviously before the second half defer as it is now, even.

I don't know of another coach who did that.

BoomerJack
7/9/2006, 04:36 AM
Also, if you go through "Bootlegger's Boy" there is passage that lists all of the All-Americans at OU during Barry's head coaching tenure. There are just as many defensive position players as offensive position players.

I am too lazy to go check scores, but my memory is that in those times the preseason hype would focus on OU's offense with some questions about defense. Early (non-conference) games would see the offense sputter and stumble a bit while the defense kept them in the game. The wishbone took a bit to get the timing down to where it was a true juggernaut.

i agree with above posts, except for 1971. if D had been as good as O;
they would surely have won NC !!!!!

of course, JMHO

if frosh coulda played in 71, randy hughes & rod shoate might've
made the difference.

If you are in a trivia mood.who is is the only OU player to be the leading rusher one year, leading passer in another season and leading reciever in yet another season ? That is three separate seasons leading the team in one category each year(just to clarify).

King Crimson

i wanna say Rod Shoate......but how's about Gary Gibbs?

in the Okie 5-2 there wasn't really an inside backer....it was strong side/weak side.

Of course it was really a 4-3, and I didn't mean a middle backer. You haven't gotten it yet, this surprised me too, because I assumed he was much faster. He says they teased him that the o-line was faster than him!

He had 7003 yards to lead in rushing, was 17- 24 passing for about 250 yards, had 12 catches for 203 yards.can't find my media guide so I am not sure what year he did what and not 100% sure on yardage.I did forget one Tommy accomplishment,he also lead the team in scoring one year with 18 TDS( THINK THIS MAY ALSO HAVE LED THE NATION.)Sorry for yelling, the key stuck and I am too lazy to retype.

Daryl claims 530 in What It Means To Be a Sooner. That book is great, because you get the player's perspectives. Terry Crouch says Switzer had to tell Jimmy Johnson to lighten up on the O-linemen, I wonder if any of their future animosity arose from that incident?
