Just in case you're bored and don't realize how sh**y communism is.

http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/showthread.php?t=82755.

My favorite one: Guess which road is built by communists and which one is built by Capitalists?

http://www.tema.ru/travel/choson-2/_MG_0061.jpg

Whether it's the Berlin Wall, the DMZ, or the sea between Cuba and America, for some reason people always die trying to get to the free country. No one dies trying to get into the communist country.

Communism is so wonderful that they have to build electric fences on their beaches to keep the populace from swimming away.

Whatever the South is doing, it appears to be working alot better. It probably has something to with a little freedom and not squashing the individual under a massive state.

Clinton gave them nuke technology as long as they agreed not to use it for military purposes.

Actually rigid authoritarism fueled most of their growth much like Singapore. They only transitioned into a real democracy in the late 80's.

Why did their rigid authoritarism work but not North Koreas?

Because their dicator was more interested in the countries success, than North Korea's and pals with America. The inter-linking of the Korean Chaebols is very similar to the Japanese's keiretsu, as well as there was a lot of state direction as there was in Japan. Neither Japan nor Korea is as entrepreniral as the Chinese are. Korean Capitalism is a lot different than American Capitalism, which is to be expected since Asian Culture is a lot different than Western Culture. Also a lack of corruption and graft helped too. Interestingly enough, SK companies are building sweatshops in special zones in NK to gain access to lower cost manufacturing while boosting the NK economy.

North Korea was actually on the path to success up to the death of Kim Il Sung. His son has really been the downfall for the country and is responsible for the massive famines.

105 Story Ryunyong Hotel

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/6c/Ryugyong_Hotel_-_May_2005.JPG/250px-Ryugyong_Hotel_-_May_2005.JPG

Never finished, only the concrete structure is done, and it is said to be very unstable. It was built during the cold war in response to South Korea's 73 story hotel. The top 8 floors are circular, and 7 of them were suppose to revolve to have "7 revolving restaurants". But none of this ever happened because they ran out of money, and probably electricity. If it were to be completed, it would be the 7th tallest tower in the world.

Wasn't the Clinton deal that we were suppose to build them 2 light water reactors to replace the ones they had that could produce plutonium, but for whatever reason we never did.

This is the nuke tech I think you are referring to, so Clinton actually never gave them anything.

So, maybe they got the technical know-how from Russia or China? They probably used all of the foriegn aid we gave them as part of a "deal" not to make weapons-grade plutonium to finance their nukes

I don't hate the average NK person. They just don't know any better and their entire lives, they've been fed propaganda.

Now, as far as psuedo-allies go, you know, people from Arab countries and Arab states who say they're our friends while bankrolling jihaadis? That really p1sses me off. I would have no compunction about eliminating their society and culture. All of it. But that's just me.

For the record, I don't put the Pakistanis in that camp. They, or at least the current government, have stood by us pretty well. Remarkable in that we crapped all over them from about 1960 until 2001 sucking-up to India.

I really don't know that much about S Korea to be honest. What I do know is that half their population is not starving like their northern brethren. If you speak your mind in South Korea, do you take a bullet in the head? Do people dissappear in South Korea by either being wisked off to re-education camps or worse? Does everyone in South Korea have to wear a pin on their shirt of South Korea's President, or risk the consequences? Can people stage a protest or a rally in South Korea without being ran over by tanks? I would bet dollars to dumf***ks that life in the two countries is extremely different. Why is that? Do people die trying to leave south korea for north korea? Sure, I'm not the expert in Asian culture here and I don't know how their economic systems work. But what I do see in North Korea is a system that crushes the very soul of an individual. They may not have American-style free markets in South Korea, but they sure are doing something right.

It was also said that before the mid-1980's, the two countries weren't all that different. Why did S. Korea evolved into what it is today, and why has N. Korea remained a place of misery?

Tyranney (sp?) was rampant in the early decades of S Korea. Freedoms were limited, students were killed for protests, assasination attempt and coruption were rampant. What made the difference was the influence of the US and the will/ability of the south koreans to strive for a better country. Freedoms made the difference - it just took and is taking time. Hell it took the US 150-200+ years for all people to have basic freedoms.

Listen noob..typo smack is for the pwn3d.:twinkies: When all else fails, play the n00b card. Sadly, your mode of argument is what is going to cost true thinking conservatives votes and mindshare over time. And that will be a shame, because there are reasonable arguments on both sides of the "geopolitical" fence, about which you claim to have forgotten much. (A claim you prove time and time again.) The knee-jerk black/white pinko/patriot with-me-or-against-me mindset is an insult to open discussion and human intelligence. It's not the typo -- it's the entire "post without thinking" mentality -- the bullying and smug arrogance -- that turns off potential allies.
