View Full Version : THE MARICOPA ARIZONA COUNTY SHERIFF

TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO

HE IS THE MARICOPA ARIZONA COUNTY SHERIFF

AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER.

THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY:

Sheriff Joe Arpaio (in Arizona) who created the "tent city jail":

He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.

He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights. Cut off all but "G" movies.

He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects.

Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination.

He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked! up the cable TV again only let in the Disney channel and the weather channel.

When asked why the weather channel he replied, so they will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs.

He cut off coffee since it has zero nutritional value.

When the inmates complained, he told them, "This isn't the Ritz/Carlton. If you don't like it, don't come back."

He bought Newt Gingrich' lecture series on videotape that he pipes into the jails.

When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of t he inmates were in his jails in the first place.

More on the Arizona Sheriff:

With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees just set a new record), the Associated Press reports: About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed-wire-surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts.

On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 degree s inside the week before.

Many were also swathed in wet, pink towels as sweat collected on their chests and dripped down to their pink socks.

"It feels like we are in a furnace," said James Zanzot, an inmate who has lived in the tents for 1 year. "It's inhumane."

Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic.

He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates:

"It's 120 degrees in Iraqand our soldiers are living in tents too, and they have to wear full battle gear, but they didn't commit any crimes, so shut your mouths!"

Way to go, Sheriff! Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders. Criminals should b e punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.

I have a friend that did a stint in that jail on a DUI rap. He reoffended and pretty much didn't learn his lesson from the experience. Of course that just might say something about the people I am friends with.

As it turns out, I've done some research into jails (not prisons) for the local DA. The Maricopa County jail system is indeed interesting. There is probably something to learn from the guy. Nevertheless, a significant problem is simply the number of folks we jail versus the available facilities. Part of the problem is the inability to adjudicate the cases in a timely fashion. In my area, it is not uncommon for folks to be jailed prior to trial for a longer period than if they had been convicted of a crime and been given the maximum sentence. As a result, they get released prior to trial.

honestly, i don't care who is governer. so long as they do their job. as for sheriff joe, i think he's got the personality that goes great with enforcing the law. that's why i think he's fine where he's at.

Recidivism rates are not that important. Prison is a place of punishment, not a rehab joint. they are doing time for past crimes, and if they **** up again, back to tent city.

Actually, wouldn't high recidivsm rates indicate that the punishment is ineffective? What good is punishment if it doesn't serve as a deterrent to future crime?

fixed it myself. same thing though.

Sure, making the tax base happy is a part of it. I have never been thrown in the clinker, but three hots and a cot INDOORS with A/C is The Bellagio compared to tent city. Just with common sense, which one is a likely deterent? But Criminals dont use common sense, therefore they land up in jail.

When people talk about punishment that works, they refer to it as chance for redemption/repenting/rehabilitation. Think of criminals as an irrational child. All reasoning and pleaing go out the window when a child throws a tantrem. What does a parent worth their salt do next, you pop them in the behind to get their attention and to let them know that this kind of behavior is unacceptable.

Yeah, it is, but America has lost its ways in the prison system. Stats are important, dont get me wrong. But it is how we react to those stats that is important.

America has gone to the "why" question too many times. Why do terrorists hate us? Why does John "The Chicken Sodemizer" Smith do what he did? Why do criminals go back to jail? So on and so forth. The focus of the corrections system is not to figure out why these dipsh!ts keep coming back, but to serve as punishment.

I disagree. I think the focus of the corrections system should be to prevent those incarcerated from committing crimes again. In some cases, severe punishment will accomplish that goal. In others, a more rehabilitative approach is necessary.

It is upon the individual who goes to prison/jail to correct themselves while they are being punished, not the county jail/ state penn/ fed super max.

I agree with the first and second sentences. Through "hard time" and separation from the civilians one should learn from the errors of his ways. Why do we need to spend time/money/effort on those we know are idiots?
