Parental role in 1950:

Parents are together and take an active role in making sure that their child is doing his homework and is respectful towards his teacher. Most homes have only one TV, which the child is not allowed to watch until homework is done. A child who disrupts class is paddled, then receives a whupping when he gets home.

Parental role in 1960:

Parents are together and take an active role in making sure their child is doing his homework. Most homes have one TV, which the kid is allowed to watch while doing homework. Kids who mouth off in class are given detention, and get a whupping when they get home.

Parental role in 1970:

Parents aren't together and take an active role in making sure that the kid is doing homework most of the time. The TV is on while doing homework, but at least they're not smoking pot. Maybe. A kid lipping off in class is given a detention.

Parental role in 1980:

Parents may be together. Parents are too busy working to acquire material wealth to make sure that homework is done. A child who earns any grade lower than an A means that the parent is going to complain to the teacher that his chances at an Ivy League school are shot. A kid who disrupts class is given a detention.

Parental role in 1990.

Parents are likely not together. Most homes have 3 TVs, including one in the child's room. The TV is on constantly, and homework gets done when there's nothing to watch. Any grade lower than an A results in a phone call to the school principal and threatening comments about paying the principal's salary. A kid who punches another student might be given a detention.

Parental role in 2000:

Parents are not likely to be together, and the kid may not even know who his dad is. The kid has been uprooted from several districts as one parent or another moves around the country for a career. Homework garners parental complaints about being excessive and cutting into hockey, soccer, jai alai, and music practice. Any grade lower than an A results in a phone call from the parent's attorney to the School Board and a potential lawsuit. A kid who strikes a teacher is given something called "In School Suspension" so that their parent can still receive free daycare-and the parent generally will call the principal to argue that the kid was either provoked or the teacher is lying.
