Bellagio and Venetian both have really nice restaurants. There's one downstairs at the Bellagio that has a patio on their lake so you can watch the watershow during dinner. Nice place. At least as of '02 they had pigeon on the menu.

I want to also mention that at 40, this is my first visit to Vegas, (the wife's first visit too at 33) so I really do appreciate all the info. Three nights without the kids is going to be pure bliss. I might even try to talk the misses into renewing our vows or something. (or is that too corny?) ;) I always wanted to have a vegas "Elvis" Wedding with Burning Love blaring as we walk back up the aisle. ;)

There are a couple chapels up on the north side where you can walk in, get a wedding dress and bouquet there, and get hitched in less than 30min. If you pay about $80 extra you can get Elvis. The place my dad went to was the one where Jon Bon Jovi and Lorenzo Lamas got married to their respective chicks back in the 80's or so. Real classy.

Plan a day just to walk around and look at stuff man, seriously you can spend the whole day just wandering around between the fountains at Bellagio and the talking statues at Ceasars Palace and the Teasure Island boat show Sirens.

and all of that crap is free.

And seriously, if you just want a nice meal that's not crazy expensive, Cravings at the Mirage. it's awesome.

Hotels that look like they're just a short walk away are actually quite a long way off. One time we were at Venetian and I was craving IHOP for breakfast (shaddup, I have a thing for their boysenberry syrup), and my wife said there was one by Stratosphere and it should only take 5 or 10 minutes to walk there. Heh.

renting the car, if you're staying on the strip, isn't a great idea at all. it's better to take cabs or the bus, or walk. driving on the strip is a royal pain in the arse, and in a lot of places you'll have to pay a lot to park. i'd skip the car except on the day you go to the grand canyon. save yourself a few hundred bucks and use it to take the wife to a 5-star restaurant. or better yet, treat her to a few hours at the Canyon Ranch Spa at Venetian (guaranteed to get you some. probably a lot. ywia.).

We need it to get over to Nellis AFB from time to time for supplies and tickets. We are not planning on driving on the strip though...that is the SUCC.

renting the car, even if you're staying on the strip, is a great idea. You made a very wise choice. I would never go to Vegas without a car again. Some say it's better to take cabs or the bus, or walk, but that's silly talk. Driving on the strip is no big deal at all, and I have yet to find a casino that you have to pay to park in. Most have free valet parking even.

i'd get the car immediately upon retireving your luggage. They even have a shuttle to the car rental place. Vegas is laid out on a very simple grid and is really easy to get around. The extra you spend on it will be well worth it in time and exhaustion of walking. Plus, you can go shcek out things off strip any time you want without having to do the cab thing (which is not cheap).

Sooner in Tampa
8/1/2006, 04:36 PM
Yeah...because when I want to sit down and do some serious gambling, I will not be on the strip.

Forget Zumanity. It's a freak show. It's supposed to be erotic, and I guess 2 or 3 scenes are, but it's mostly a freak show. The tricks weren't very acrobatic as you would expect. But it makes sense. Think about it. If you're a superstar acrobat, would you work for a nice show where you wear clothes, or work at a creepy show where you're naked most of the time?

hmmm. different strokes, i guess, soonerboarder. we've been going 3 or 4 times a year for several years now, and having done it the first couple of times, i wouldn't waste money renting a car in vegas under any circumstances, except to leave the city to see some other attraction. but i guess if you can't afford cabs and don't like walking or buses, it might be an option for some people.

Boarder
8/1/2006, 04:51 PM
I counted up one time and I've been around 15-20 times. The first time I didn't rent a car the first day. After that, every single time. I've never had a problem. Never have to wait on a cab, etc.

Rental cars are cheap, too.

And, I go off strip a lot. One of my favorite things to do is to go to Mount Charleston. Also, to go to the Las Vegas Fitness Club to work out once per vacation. And, if you wanted an In 'n' Out burger, you wanna have to walk all the way there or take a cab?

That's why I always get a car. If I stayed at, say, Paris, and never got north of Treasure Island or south of The Luxor and never off the strip, I may feel differently.

And, I don't drink so much I can't drive so the "rescue cab" is not needed.

etouffee
8/1/2006, 05:00 PM
We rarely leave the strip. If we do leave for an excursion, such as out to lake las vegas, we use the rental car desk at whatever hotel we're staying at, and get a car for 1 day. We're usually at Venetian, Paris, or Mandalay Bay; a couple of times Bellagio but only if they have a great rate special. I've never had to wait for a cab at all, as they are always lined up at the hotels waiting for fares, and since we stay in a relatively small area of the strip, it's not that expensive to cab it from hotel to hotel, assuming we don't feel like walking. We generally do a goodly amount of walking, except in the daytime during the summer.

I think we are going to rent a car for at least one day while we are there, we want to do the GC trip, but don't want to make it the whole day.

Other than that, we just walk or take the rail. And the rail runs directly behind the timeshare where we stay which is behind the Flamingo.

Walking, even in the heat of the summer just doesn't bother me. Heck, I even play golf out there in the cheap tee times, between 1-3. You'd be shocked how empty the golf courses are at 1 o clock in August.

You need to splurge one day and play Paiute (I think that's what it's called). It's north of the city. Beautiful lush green course right in the middle of the barren wasteland desert. There's another couple of courses I've played there on the west side of town and they're absolutely gorgeous, too. It gets you out of the casino for a few hours. :D
