My computer is starting to act up. It takes longer to boot up, then beteween clicks on pages or around the computer, it pauses like it's catching up. When I open control panel add remove programs to get rid of some programs I don't need, they never come up. It just says "please wait while we retrieve ths list" or something like that.

When I start clicking around and it freezes up, in the processes screen "explorer.exe" goes up to around 21,476k. What does that mean?

Can it be from overheating? It started recently, but I havent really added too many new programs.

Here are some pics that may help:

have you run adaware or the like lately?

you might also run msconfig.exe and see uncheck a lot of stuff on the "Startup"
tab, you can basically uncheck everything, but you can also see most of what is starting up from there

Start -> Run -> type "msconfig"

wrong explorer ;)

my explorer is using 25, almost 26 MB right now, so i'm thinking that isn't the problem, it sounds about normal

Defrag, clean the hard drive, and restart.

gdc speaks the truth

start - programs - accessories - system tools - disk defragmenter

That sounds like your problem

Download and run this application: http://ccleaner.com/ (run the cleaner and the issues option.)

And then defrag your hard drive...it sounds like you are over run with spyware.

Okay, ran adaware, spybot and window defender. Deleted all the stuff it said to , which wasn;t all that much since I run them semi regulary. Ran CCcleaner and it deleted a whole bunch of crap. unchecked all the stuff on startup as well.

Disk fragment is at 1%. One weird thing, it no longer show my 2nd harddrive (D:) on there. When i try to open it uncer my computer, it freezes it up and gives me the not responding error. Could this be part of the problem. That hard drive is just misc stuff from my old computer. It has been on it the whole time and never acted up before. All my programs and software run off of C: drive

the failing harddrive could be mucking up the works, if it's timing out on the I/O junk that could be causing it to be groggy

seems i've had that happen before

Along those lines, look under Disk Management and see if XP/2000 is listing your hard drives as anything less than Healthy.

And what's your freespace?

What size is your virutal memory?

is your antivirus up to date?

How does one check this? Do what Grape suggested?

Will do tonight when I get home.

disconnect the second hard drive. see if that helps. I've seen it happen where a bad hard drive does cause crazy bootup times...

also, with the add/remove garbage, I could imagine that that times out if windows tries to check a hard drive that isn't responding.

Yeah, I'll have to try that tonight. That's the only thing that seems different.

Mine has booted off the slave a couple times (windows98). It was kinda freaky to see my old desktop & all my old crap.

leaving the entire contents of an old system on a slave drive doesn't sound very bright to me...

Hit it with a hammer. Really hard. That should shake loose whatever's causing the problem.

I'm not a computer genius, I admit. It hasn't done it in probably 3 years. :O
