Is there an easy way to size up the best value / best gas mileage on a car and or truck?

With oil hitting $75.00 a barrel I'm looking for a 3rd vehicle to drive to work everyday.

I thought about a bike but other drivers are just to dangerous anymore.

We're thinking maybe a cheap used car for the 3rd would be best especially if we can find one with decent mileage.

Toyota Yaris, safe (for a small car), 39mpg (probably more), and only $10,000

Just found an '04 Corolla for $10,990. They get 38 higway with the automatic and 41 with the 5-speed stick.

A new Kia Rio starts at just over $11k and gets 38 highway. 100k mile warranty too.

Hyundai Accent starts at $12.5k and gets 36 highway.

Chevrolet Cobalt - $12.9k - 34 mpg.

Chevrolet Aveo - $10k - 35 mpg.

I'm pretty sure we're gonna stay in the Toyota or Honda market.

Thanks all.

I put over 250,000 on my last civic and it never gave me a bit of trouble.
never.
it did eat cv joints though.. i think they got those fixed now.

they don't ride real quiet but i'm happy.

Adobe- the sassy new Mexican import. German engineering and Mexican know-how help to create the first car to break the $200 barrier. That's because it's made out of clay.

they are bringing that SMART car here soon...

but it's a Mercedes/Dodge/Benz/Chrysler or something

i saw some thing about the cheapest/greenest car to own a while back and i think it was the Scion xB

that was before the Yaris and Fit were released though i think

They are sweet, but they stopped making them in 05 while the
mixture of Diesel is being re-done. VW hopes to have them
back by 08.

My gas passat 2.0T, and slickwife 3.6 BAMF are both righteous.

You could get an old 80's Suburban for $1500 or so. If you drive 15,000 miles a year, it'd cost you about $2000 more per year for the Suburban (at 12 mpg est) vs one of the 38 mpg $10000 cars. So, it'd take you 5 years or so to make up the cost with gas savings, not counting the insurance cost difference or anything.

So, it doesn't make a lot of sense to buy a new car for the gas mileage. It will take a while to make up the cost.

I really miss my '89 GMC short bed . . . I actually got new rims for it at ya'lls place back in about 1994 or so.

I had that sucker lookin' pretty slick if I do say so myself. Getting rid of it was one of the stupidest things I've probably ever done.

Ooh - A friend of mine has been looking at the Honda Fit but is waiting for someone else to get one and tell her what it's like. Go get one of those and report back.

TIA.

I'd go Corolla or civic. I have trouble buying a car in it's first model year. There are always glitches.
