WASHINGTON - Oil prices jumped to a record above $75 a barrel on Wednesday, propelled by a rally in gasoline that analysts said could send average U.S. pump prices past $3 a gallon by the weekend.

Recent snags in oil-shipping and refining along the Gulf Coast have raised traders’ concerns about motor-fuel supplies at a time when demand continues to rise despite soaring prices. The start of a new fiscal quarter also has brought more speculative money into the market, brokers said.

“Everybody thought we’d hit a price that would create permanent demand destruction. But demand for gasoline is rising,” said Alaron Trading Corp. analyst Phil Flynn. “Once again the American public has shown its ability to get over paying high prices for gasoline.”

It's $2.77 out here right now. 1 car has about 1/4 of a tank, the other is close to empty...We're gonna be f***ed if it jumps to $3 tomorrow.

With all the talk on here, I finally paid attention to what I was paying tonight - $3.03 for 89 octane. Eh, still not too bad.

That is right by me. I was on empty last night out in Yukon and paid $2.79...knowing it was only $2.70 right around the corner from my house..it sucked.

You don't have a choice in the price you pay but you have a choice as far as changing your driving habbits go.

(Not speaking about YOU, just in general)

Go check out the drive through at any Taco Bueno around 7:30 PM and you'll see a line of SUV's wrapped around the building in idle, air conditioning pumping no doubt and just burning up gas for no reason.
How many people will get in their car and drive two blocks to the convenience store to get a cup of coffee rather than just walking?
When you see people behaving like that you have to conclude $3 gas is still cheap to them.

Hmmm... maybe if gas goes up, dad will start taking me to work on his motorycle, instead of me driving the truck. That could be fun. :D

Heck no. If it weren't for the fact that the engine sounds unhappy (for lack of a better description) when I put the lower stuff in it, I'd probably try to get away with it anyway.

The Energy Information Administration's weekly stockpile report showed gasoline supplies increased by 700,000 barrels. Analysts were expecting a 1.9 million barrel decline in gas supplies, according to Reuters.

The build in gasoline was a surprise, but the gain was fairly modest, A.G. Edwards & Sons commodities analyst Bill O'Grady said.

He attributed the decline in oil prices more to traders pulling back from the previous session.

"In part the market is reacting to yesterday's lift. I found yesterday's rally a bit of a stretch," he said.

The front-month crude contract settled at a fresh all-time high of $75.19 a barrel Wednesday as tensions over Iran and worries about North Korea sent prices soaring more than a dollar.

The weekly inventory report also showed crude supplies fell by a larger-than-expected 2.4 million barrels. Analysts were looking for a drop of 1.9 million barrels. But oil inventories remain well above the upper end of the average range for this time of year, the EIA said.

The government's report showed gasoline demand over the last four weeks has risen 1.4 percent from the same period last year. But the increase in consumption is about normal, O' Grady said

It ain't necessarily a good idea to run premium in an engine not designed to take advantage of the higher octane.
