Are you still young or do you have old man/old woman ears? Click on the link at the right side of the wikipedia page to hear it...or not

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mosquito_Ringtone

So a little experiment.
I hear it fine.
I brought my wife in and started the sound loop. She never flinched. I told her about it and then started it. She can't hear it. Even stood right by the speaker but nada. (I told her she has old lady ears.)

Then I bring my 6 year old son in and start it. I never told him about it, he immediately grimaced and put his hands over his ears. I asked if it hurt and he said not really a hurt but more like fingernails on a chalk board.

Pretty wild. Especially since I can hear it with my gun shot/loud music listening to damaged hearing.
My dad looks at me like I'm nuts when I play it for him, he says I'm messing with him.
One of my teenage patients grimaced when she heard it a few minutes ago.
Weird.:D

Hey, can someone re-host that mp3 with a different extension so i can download it? I could download hard core porn in an avi file here if I wanted, but for some reason mp3 files are too evil for me to download at work. I'm pretty sure they do that so I can't hear communist propoganda, which is usually downloaded in mp3 format.

Oh nevermind. I found it in wav format here:
http://www.jetcityorange.com/MosquitoRingtone.html

Wavs aren't evil - just mp3s.

I played it at max volume and nobody around me noticed.

We're all old. :(

Yes! I'm 25 I can still hear it. Although two weeks ago someone thought I was 14.

I, and another grad student in the lab, (both 27) can hear it...but no one else (respective ages 26, 29, 29, and 50ish).

I obviously do not rock.

I hear it just fine at age 26. Must be the musician's ears. ;) Really though, it's nearly the same pitch you hear from a CRT monitor or tv when it's turned on.

My daughter sent me this one. Scroll down about halfway. Let me know what you can hear.

That was grating... and I've been playing in bands and loud music for years.

I just find it weird that some people find those sounds uncomfortable. Oh, and on Baja's site I can hear 15,000 and 16,000. Beyond that I can tell something's happening but I can't actually hear it.

I always hear a high pitched tone. And voices.

I was watching Glenn Beck the other night & he played one of those "mosquito" sounds. The whole family went nuts from the grating, high pitched whine. I asked what was going on. :D

Of course, I just took that test on the page Baja linked & could hear every one of the samples from 10K htz to 25K htz. except for 24K. Weird.

I recieved an email from one of our tech folks at school last week regarding the ringtone. Finally listened, I am 34 and can hear it. I'd flip out like a ninja if some phone went off like that in my class.

OK, i can hear it through my speakers but can't through my headphones. My headphones here are horrible. it's not exactly horribly screaching or anything, so maybe I'm not getting the full effect.

Back in the '80s, my folks had a 'vintage' TV that would lose its vertical hold now and then for no apparent reason. Whenever it did, it put out a really high-pitched sound that my parents couldn't hear. They didn't believe that I was hearing anything until I told them from the other room that the TV was messed up.

I can't hear it, but I selectively filter out high pitched tones anyway......'till I feel a broom handle upside of the head. :D

I can hear it but it doesn't bother me at all.

So I am young enough to hear it but been through enough that it takes much more than a little noise to bother me?

Whew. Now that I'm on my home PC with better speakers, I can hear all of them.

Yay me.

I can hear it fine at first, then it starts to fade in the background where I am aware that it's there, but I'm not exactly hearing it anymore.

Kind of annoying, but not too much so.

My s-i-l has the record so far - 22,000. And she is older than I am! I plan to test her the next time I see her as I think she is lying.
Lil Baja got 18,000 and I got 15,000

I'd never heard of this until a local Austin station did a news story about kids using it as a ringtone in the classroom. I listened to the sample, and I can just BARELY make it out; it's very very faint. I think if I wasn't trying to hear it then I'd never ever pick up on it at all.

Try this to see at what frequency you can no longer hear the sound:
