Any ideas what kind it is? I didn't even notice the cicada shedding it's skin until I looked at the pic this morning, I guess I know what drew it to the porch.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nerodia_sipedon

Nerodia sipedon is the Northern Water Snake, a large, well-known colubrid of North America. They live near lakes, ponds, marshes, streams, rivers, and canals; just about anywhere there is water...or elfs.
That's gotta be it.

Holy carp, I've never heard of this in snakes...

Northern Water Snakes mate in April and June. They are live-bearers, which means they do not lay eggs like most snakes. Instead, they carry them inside their bodies and give birth to baby snakes, each one six to twelve inches long. A female may have as many as 30 young at a time. Babies are born between August and October

Kudos for letting it live... I've never understood spider and snake killers (unless we're talking black widows, brown recluse, or venomous snakes). They kill the things that annoy and gross us out (mice, mosquitos, crickets, scorpions, rats, etc). Apparently snakes gross people out, so I guess it's just a matter of what you like least.

Yeah, I was gonna say... That thing has a triangular head. Triangular head = poisonous. Looked a lot like a copperhead to me.

Still, I don't know about killing them if there's nobody else near where you live. If you can avoid them, why kill them. Now, if there's children around where you live, them snakes' got to go.

Ok a quick rule of thumb for snake bites ( our Okie snakes )
Copperhead bite = make you sick
Cotton mouth = get to a doc , you should be ok , biggest worry is infection , cause of thier nasty mouths
Any Rattler = ya got a 50 -50- shot of getting any Venom , If the snake did inject venom you have a 50/'50 shot 0f living , Even if you dont go to Doc
Best rule of thumb = leave the dayum things alone they wont bite you if you dont bite them ;)
Ive spent a lot of years hunting and fishing in OUR great state , Have Never had a prob with any snake Just sayin

Also, adults are heavy bodied, with a head noticeably wider than the neck. Young cottonmouths do not resemble adults. They are lighter in color and have 10 to 15 crossbands on their back. The tip of the tail is yellow in newborns. As with all venomous snakes in Missouri, cottonmouths have elliptical pupils, like those of a cat. They also have a visible pit between the nostril and the eye.

Well my name's John Lee Pettimore
Same as my daddy and his daddy before
You hardly ever saw Grandaddy down here
He only came to town about twice a year
He'd buy a hundred pounds of yeast and some copper line
Everybody knew that he made moonshine
Now the revenue man wanted Grandaddy bad
He headed up the holler with everything he had
It's before my time but I've been told
He never came back from Copperhead Road

Now Daddy ran the whiskey in a big block Dodge
Bought it at an auction at the Mason's Lodge
Johnson County Sheriff painted on the side
Just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside
Well him and my uncle tore that engine down
I still remember that rumblin' sound
Well the sheriff came around in the middle of the night
Heard mama cryin', knew something wasn't right
He was headed down to Knoxville with the weekly load
You could smell the whiskey burnin' down Copperhead Road

I volunteered for the Army on my birthday
They draft the white trash first,'round here anyway
I done two tours of duty in Vietnam
And I came home with a brand new plan
I take the seed from Colombia and Mexico
I plant it up the holler down Copperhead Road
Well the D.E.A.'s got a chopper in the air
I wake up screaming like I'm back over there
I learned a thing or two from ol' Charlie don't you know
You better stay away from Copperhead Road

Copperhead Road
Copperhead Road

Here's a Cottonmouth, for comparison.

http://www.sfondideldesktop.com/Images-Animals/Snake/Cottonmouth-Snake-/Cottonmouth-Snake-.Jpg

Be aware that cottonmouths go through color and marking changes as they mature. Some may be mistaken for c'heads by those unfamiliar with both, but their habitats differ somewhat.
