If I wanted to burn a VCR tape to a DVD, would I need a TV tuner card for the proper plug-ins or is there a simpler way to do it? I have some raunchy Gridiron tapes from my med school days that I'd like to keep. Thanks.:D

That pretty much IS the simple way. TV tuner cards can be had for probably $30.

I bought a video capture device called a "Dazzle". Plugs into your VCR and your PC. You capture the video, then can burn it to a DVD.

There are also external DVD-R drives that can be used as stand alone devices that record straight from a video source. It's quite a bit more expensive (~$200), but it may be simpler.

I actually have one of those, but the last few times I've used it, it gives a crappy picture. I kinda thought I'd want to edit it somewhat. There's 4 tapes, I thought about putting all my class' videos on one DVD.

I'm not terribly happy with the results of the Dazzle device either. However, I am taking 2 hour analog camcorder tapes and putting them on a DVD, which is really only made to hold 1 hour of video. I have to compress the video to get two hours on a DVD. Now, with multilayer DVD's much cheaper, I'm going to have to try that and see if the video quality improves.

yeah, i'd say the Tuner Card is cheaper, not simpler

i think Sony has a DVD recorder that will record from anything

EDIT: of course i took too long to post, so this doesn't make any sense :P

You may very well run into compression problem that Turk is talking about regardless of what method you use if you try to put too much video onto a single DVD.

I've got a Panasonic DMR-E85 - it's a DVR and DVD-R burner all in one.
Sweet little system.

Yep, on "high speed" dubbing, it's 4x, but is still working great.
