for me that'd be a Driver, hybrid, hybrid, 7 just to get to the green and then I would at least 3 putt.

i don't know if Tiger has got this one in him....it's gotta be tough.

and:

http://sports.yahoo.com/golf/pga/news?slug=ap-usopen&prov=ap&type=lgns

He has won only one of his 10 majors when he shoots over par in the first round, opening with a 74 at the Masters last year.

"I've just got to plod along; shoot under par the next two days, I'll be right there," he said.

Considering there was only one round under par Thursday, that might be a tall order. Woods was told that only Ben Hogan in 1951 at Oakland Hills and Jack Fleck in 1955 at Olympic Club had started with a 76 and gone on to win the Open. That brought a rare smile.

"It's been done before, hasn't it?" he said.

i don't like this: from yahoo link above:

He tried to reach the 321-yard sixth hole with his tee shot and was in decent shape to the left until flying the next shot over the green. After hitting his approach over the corporate tent and into the grandstand -- on purpose -- he was able to take a free drop and pounded that one through the green, needing to make a 6-footer to escape with bogey.

this is abuse of the TIO (Temporary Immovable Obstruction) rule....i doubt many will care but to me that's bad sportsmanship.

I thought it was a legitimate shot that he thought he could pull off. 15 feet to the left and it was not in the grandstand, but on the fringe.

That would of been a hell of a shot, wrapping around the trees on any other weekend if that grandstand wasn't so close to the green.

i got an email from my pops last night--who works the Open as a walking USGA rules official. look for the story of the weekend to be the growth of the "weed" Poa Annua--which is a weed that grows in the green surface turf in what he called "very rapid intraday growth"...combined with the warm weather, breezy wind, and below surface moisture the rapid and irregular poa growth causes the greens to be slower and bumpier than a normal Open....and gives an advantage to early players before the growth really sets in.

he says the greens are rolling about 11.5-12 on the stimpmeter....which is pretty slow for a major. Tiger made indirect comments about this yesterday.

FYI. FWIW.

Some dude called into a local sports radio talk show and they were talking about the Poa Annua. The radio host...he works for the Golf Channel on the weekend is a big fan of the Poa Annua. He said that it makes the best putting surface in the world...he didn't talk about the day growth though.

BTW, this morning on the radio, I heard that the "volunteers" that are working the Open had to pay $150 for the uniforms...and the ONLY thing they recieve for volunteering is....Lunch.

I guess $150 for 4 days of golf during the US Open is a pretty good deal.

I guess $150 for 4 days of golf during the US Open is a pretty good deal.

it depends....some of the volunteer jobs are sacking souveniers in the merchandise tent or managing the lines in the tent....i don't think those people see too much golf. the cushy on-course stuff like marshalling (the guys with the quiet signs....or controlling the fairway walkways) is usually given to members of the host club.

yeah, i'm not sure what to make of the poa annua stuff....it's not like this is the first major at Winged Foot....or even in the area.

i didn't see it...so i'll take your word for it. i'd prefer to believe that's true...than a sharky move like intentional TIO drop.

I watched that shot, I don't think he was trying to hit it in the grandstands at all, it just needed to hook about 20 yards and he's fine. Where Tiger is concerned, it was certainly within his realm of possibilities. HOWEVER, I am also SURE that he knew if it didn't turn, he'd get the drop. But the new way they have the drops set up, there's no guarantee what you will get. They painted circles in the rough, in some nasty spots, and that's where you get to drop.

IMO, he didn't hit in the stands on purpose.

last night the golf channel interviewed the marshalls who spot the balls off the tee. you know, they stick the little flags in the rough for the players to find their balls.
now that's a job I wouldn't mind doing.

on the other hand. I think those SOBs should have to look for their ball.:)

Stricker to -2.

some interesting stuff on his scorecard. he was +4 after 3 yesterday.....and did make 5 birdies (which was alot all things considered). has shot a cumulative 66 on the back nine over two days....which is pretty impressive, comparatively speaking.

avg. driving distance about 270....which ranks about 140 currently in the field. i return to my comments that good iron play will factor more than gorilla balls off the tee....

this USGA leaderboard/website is pretty good as per ease of use and stat info....much better than the one at PGAtour.com or yahoo.

King Crimson

GD's actually pretty tame for Eldrick. that part i don't care about...really.

now, he SHOULD have been penalized on Friday last year at Pinehurst for green damage in a little putter dragging tantrum he threw on #4....BUT, he was in danger of missing the cut and the USGA bigwigs caved to the networks against the advice of the walking rules official who witnessed it.

the penalty should have been assessed since by damaging the green he negatively affected the chances of every other player who played the hole after him from having a fair competitive chance to not get hosed by having to putt in the line of his green damage. this was the unanimous opinion in the USGA tent....

but....he's Tiger.

Yeah. I enjoy watching this tournament more than any others. It makes these freaks of nature look almost human. The get to know what it's like to make bogey or double bogey and be scared that you won't be able to get the stroke(s) back. Watching birdies is fun, but tournaments where everyone on the first page of the leaderboard is -25 or so doesn't interest me in the least.
