Great guy, love him, but let's just say he's a little bit behind the times. Modern technology isn't his strong suit. He didn't know what TiVO was and probably also thought DVD was a brand of underwear.
The latest example:
I spent the past few days at my parents' house. My dad just bought a new pickup truck (Chevy Silverado, extended cab) so he was showing it off.
I then ask about his radio. It's all it is, just an AM-FM radio. No tape deck, no CD player, no satellite radio. He said, "Well, in my old truck my radio went out about five years ago and I just wanted to listen to the radio when I'm driving again." In contrast, my sister showed me the new radio in her car, a tricked-out radio with a movable CD player attachment. In case you're wondering, I have a tape deck and XM satellite radio.
Today, before I left to go back home, me, my folks and my sister were talking about music. My sister said her daughter liked listening to "American Idol" stuff, like Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.
My dad then said, "What's American Idol?"
Me and my sister looked at each other like, you've gotta be kidding. You would have to live in a cave to have not heard of "American Idol."
Then, after we told him what "American Idol" was, the conversation went something like this:
Dad: "Is it like that talent show that was hosted by that old guy?"
Me: "Star Search hosted by Ed McMahon?"
Dad: "No (probably never heard of Star Search, either)."
Mom: "Original Amateur Hour by Ted Mack?"
Dad: "No, not that either."
Me: "Ed Sullivan?"
Sis: "The Gong Show?"
Dad: "No. It was hosted by some old guy with red hair. What was his name? Arthur something or another.......Oh, yeah. Arthur Godfrey. Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts, that was it."
I do a Wikipedia search that night to find out that Arthur Godfrey's show came on in the late '40s-early '50s when my dad was a boy. Now that's going way back.
Again, my dad's a great guy but he's the kind of guy who still thinks "Bonanza" is still on the air and not in reruns.
