View Full Version : So my mom's been diagnosed with breast cancer

Sooner_Bob
6/14/2006, 05:49 PM
which is totally something I never thought I'd have to deal with.

She's scheduled for a lumpectomy next Tuesday with further treatments being dependent on the test results from the tissue that is removed.

She had a biopsy a couple of weeks ago and was told things were benign, but went ahead and had the lump removed on Monday. They ran more tests and it came back malignant this time.

Even with all the uncertainty she seems to be in good spirits. I guess dad is doing ok . . . he's your typical dad that doesn't show a ton of emotions.

Please pray that the doctors will get all of the cancerous tissue on Tuesday and that things will come back negative and that the treatments in the future will do the job and this will be over with.

I'm still in the "not so sure what to think about this" stage at the moment so you might pray for me and my two brothers and our families as well.

Thanks!

Dude, treatment for BC has advanced A LOT these past few years. A while back, it was really bad news to be diagnosed with it but nowadays it's not so...bad.

My Aunt was diagnosed with it a few years ago and they went in, removed it, she had a couple of weeks of treatment and that was it. She's been cancer-free ever since.

I'm hoping for the same for your mom.

Sooner_Bob my family just went thru this with my sister-in-law last summer. She had a double mastectomy on June 1, 2005 and she has been doing just great.

The advances that have been made in breast cancer treatments are amazing.....my sil went home the day after her surgery....she was sitting up and talking just hours afterward.

She's done so well that I often forget all that she's gone thru.

She did lose her hair, but it grew back so beautiful.

I tell you all of that to make you feel a little better, and maybe worry a little less.

My wife has been going through the same thing. She had a questionable mass show up during a routine physical. She then had a mammography which indicated it to be a fiborous mass perhaps related to recent weight loss. Nevertheless, she is going to need to be ever vigilant in continuing to monitor the situation. These sorts of things keep your perspective grounded. I don't do the prayer thing, but will keep my fingers crossed. All the best to you and your family.

Bob,

Sorry to hear about your mom. I will be happy to oblige your request. My sister in law had it, fought it and had a lumpectomy and is doing well. My mother in law had it, and similar to your mom, had a lumpectomy right away followed by radiation treatments and the cancer has not returned. That was about seven years ago so she is "cancer free".

You know about my dad and his luekemia, I talked to you about it on the other board. Let me tell you that a positive attitude by your entire family along with your mom will do wonders. Just treat this as something that you are just going to fight together. Don't ever let your mom's spirits get down. If they do, get them up as fast as possible. Believe me, a great attitude and positive spirit does wonders. Keep your head up!

I remember the "not so sure what I think about this stage". My mother-in-law fought it for quite some time. I think I might have been the first one to grasp the severity. My prayers are definitely with you at this overwhelming time. Please, please, please tell her (and your dad and the rest of the family) to make sure she does exactly what the doc says.

My sis-in-law also went through this last winter, however, she is fine now....and cancer free.

I had a scare a few years ago, and it was when I was alone, that I didn't do so well.

Just be there for her, if you can. Your daddy's gonna need you too.

Prayers from Kim
