SOONERS RELEASE 2006-2007 SCHEDULE
DATE: June 14, 2006
(NORMAN, OK) – After making their first trip to the American Collegiate Hockey Association (“ACHA”) Division 1 National Championship Tournament and finishing the 2005-2006 season ranked 11th in the nation, the University of Oklahoma® Hockey club has finalized its schedule for the upcoming 2006-2007 regular season. The entire 2006-2007 regular season schedule is set forth below.
The Sooners will play 34 games during the regular season, 21 of which will be played at home in Oklahoma City. The Sooners will open their 2006-2007 season on September 22nd and 23rd when they play host to the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers.
The Sooners will play host to traditional ACHA D1 rivals Arizona, Arizona State and Weber State and will welcome new D1 opponents Minot State and Central Oklahoma to the home schedule. The Sooners will also play home games against quality Division 2 teams Michigan State, Minnesota, Missouri State, St. Cloud State and UNLV. Road games on the schedule this season will see OU head out to face D1 powers Iowa State, Arizona and Weber State as well as traveling north across town to take on Central Oklahoma.
A new wrinkle to the regular season schedule is OU’s participation in the 4th Annual ACHA D1 Showcase which is being held this year in Youngstown, OH. The Sooners were one of 16 Division 1 teams selected to appear at this year’s Showcase. This year’s Showcase is being set up as an “East vs. West” affair which means that the Sooners will play three games against their talented D1 peers from the Eastern region of the U.S.
The Sooners were also selected to be one of four teams to participate in this season’s Desert Classic in Tempe, AZ. Hosted by Arizona State, the Desert Classic will provide OU with the opportunity to compete in three games against top D1 opponents.
“In assembling this season’s schedule, we wanted to be sure to schedule opponents that would challenge us and allow the club to build on last season’s success,” said Sooners Head Coach Larry Donovan. “While we’re pleased with where we finished last season in the rankings, we’re not satisfied. We want to go a lot further into the National Tournament and the clubs on this schedule will certainly provide us with tremendous competition. If we take care of our business on the ice,” Donovan said, “we’ll have a great opportunity to compete for a championship at Nationals at the end of the season.”
