I don't know, dude....

George Clinton and Parliament/Funkadelic/the P. Funk All-Stars kicked some major a$$.

BSG nailed that one, and here are some other groups better than Morris Day and the Time:

EARTH WIND & FIRE Duh!
Commodores (Have you ever heard Brick House?)
Kool & The Gang (In the Seventies, probably the best funk band)
Cameo (Knights of the Sound Table was the ultimate Funk Album IMHO)
The Gap Band (Oklahoma Funk at its finest)
Carl Carlton
Rufus
Con Funk Shun

Indeed. But there ain't nothing like watching a whole band go gliding across a floor, instruments and all, the way The Time was prone to do.

Additionally, if the opening bars of The Bird don't get you on the dance floor, then you are either genetically pure Anglo... or you're dead.

Morris Day and the Mother****in' Time

You don't know Jungle Love? That s*** is the mad note! Written by God herself and handed down to the greatest band in the world - the muthaf***in' Time!!!

Oh did I say that out loud? ;)

The Time had some nice hooks (ooooh ooooh ooooh ooooh, aaaah aaaah aaaah aaaah) and Morris stole some ideas about stage presence from the master, James Brown, but not the greatest Funk band ever...;)

James Brown and the later band w/Maceo Parker et al. most 80's/early 90's hip hop is/was a footnote to the Funky Drummer beat....Eric B. and Rakim, PE's Nation of Millions and on and on....

Parliament/P-Funk

Sly and the Family Stone

Hmmmm. Earth, Wind, and Fire was probably leaning more towards "soul" than "funk". for straight-up funk, I'd have to go with George Clinton and James Brown. For soul, EWF and Tower of Power.

Not that I'm hatin' on Morris Day and the muthafunkin' Time or anything. :D

ToP rules, too.

Good call.

Speaking of soul...

Al Green's Let's Stay Together, is there a better soul song?

Make my funk the P.Funk
I want my funk uncut
Make my funk the P.Funk
I wants to get funked up.
I want the bomb,
I want the P.Funk
I want my funk uncut.
Make my funk the P.Funk
I wants to get funked up.

I've specifically requested Mothership Connection to be played at my funeral so don't be asserting that the Time is the best.

Meh. It's not like wikipedia is written by experts. And I'm just saying that EWF - while funky at times - seems to fall more into a "soul" category to me. I would certainly not classify Fantasy, Shining Star, or September as funk.

I would say that Tower of Power is consistently funkier than EWF - Squib Cakes may be one of the funkiest tunes ever - but they call themselves a soul band.

Um. Yeah, the Time was funktastic, but the best?

nope.

I'd even put the Average White Band ahead of 'em.

And for a single, dig Heatwave's "Groove Line".

oh, you remember:

Rain, shine, won't mind
We're riding on the Groove Line
Tonight

Word. That funky little man has more creative energies in his manicured left pinkie than most of us will ever attain.
