compared to gas? It is one of the first things pulled off of crude oil and is considered a "junk" fuel. Anyone know why? Anyone getting a good raping at the pump?:mad:

Seriously, probably has to do with the high cost of the base product (crude) and the cost of the de-sulfuring in addition to all the other passed on costs...

More expensive than what grade of gas? National averages put diesel 8 cents per gallon more than regular, but 21 cents per gallon cheaper than premium. At this point I wish my car ran on diesel instead of premium.

Probably because the demand for diesel is out of line with capacity. Also since diesel is more effecient than gas, your not that much worse off. Plus summer would be peak months for diesel consumption.

Dad was paying $80 a week on deisel for the truck. I dont know about how much cheaper it is, but the amounts you buy more than make up for it.

There was 12 cent difference between regular unleaded and diesel at the Love's I usually go to. Just in the refining process, gas is more laborous because the different grades and additives. Two forms of diesel vs. 100's of various unleaded gas.

The only reason diesel is used is because it is a more effiecent provider of horsepower.

Well, diesel Jettas get 40+ mpg. And I'm assuming that if regular gas produced power more efficiently than diesel gigantic trucks wouldn't still be using diesel.

I bought this truck pre-Katrina, when diesel was cheaper. Then presto-chango they switch.

Its 30 cent a gall. higher in Denver. Said it was some kind of additive, won't be getting much cheaper.For the extra money and diesel engine not much better fuel mileage. Not very good buy right now.

I may have to quit my job and buy a bio-diesel kit and collect old fry oil full time to convert it just to keep driving my truck

Gigantic diesel trucks have way's of getting around fuel price's.That bottle of pop that was 1 dollar last year is now dollar thirty.:)

Diesel has a 13% higher energy density than gasoline (measured volumetrically). Until diesel's price exceeds gasoline's by >= 13%, diesel buyers are getting a good deal.

is that including the extra cost when buying the vehicle plus interest on extra 5.000 dollars on a pickup

No. But it also doesn't factor in the greater durability and utility that a diesel engine provides in a pickup.

Here is some diesel trivia for ya: My caterpillar rep was telling me that by the year 2010 the exhaust coming out of a diesel powered truck will be cleaner than the air going into it.

Yep. Also, that's already true of gasoline powered SULEV & PZEV cars.

I remember when i was 10 they told me it would be just like the Jetson's when I was 40.
