Zeppelin would easily make the list. Even if they weren't so bad-a, their sheer volume and variety would earn them a heavy consideration.

The 3rd one is tough. A lot of the bands that have been mentioned would be great ones. I might add Elton John and Johnny Cash to the list of possible candidates for that 3rd spot. Maybe OutKast too...just to add a little more variety.

um, how many times did that album go platinum?
They were underrated due to Nirvana in the whole grunge era. It may have sold alot of "records" but when quizzed about the "Grunge Era", who is the first response? Answer: Nirvana. Soundgarden was the gimp kept in the basement.

they didn't have the impact that Nirvana did, but that album went crazy on MTV and the radio
they didn't even really play the best songs from it
MTV nailed it with that "Buzz Bin" back in the day though... Live, Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden it was crazy how all of those bands took off. it really took Live and Soundgarden another album for it to happen though

Late 80s: Soundgarden had released Ultramega OK (SST) and some previous stuff (singles and EP's) on SubPop in an era when any band on SubPop had a chance to get a major record deal--they were the taste aribiters for teh whole scene for many years.
SG signed on A&M's developing artists subsidiary label and released Louder than Love which was well recieved and earned them an opening spot on both Jane's Addiction (Nothing's Shocking) and Danzing (danzig) tours. Badmotorfinger came out and had a couple decent "hits"--jesus christ pose and another one i can't remember the name of...but the record did well and there were videos....there was a lot of industsry buzz about SG for a long time....they didn't exactly come out of nowhere.
neither did Nirvana--freaking Butch Vig produced their first major label record. Bleach earned them a lot of indie pub. in fact, while Nevermind is considered to have re-invented rock music a lot of the people i knew in the Nocal and Pac NW scenes thought it was a total sellout.
the "grunge" bands than got "gimped" were bands like the Leaving Trains, Tad, The Fluid** and to a lesser degree Screaming Trees.
The Fluid were widely considered in the same category as Nirvana and SG and AIC in the late 80's by scenester publications....after the release of the excellent Roadmouth LP and an EP called Glue (I think) on SubPop.....but they didn't get the same label push for their sophomore "label" debut.

yup, both of them, thanks. also, "Feeling Minnesota" if that's what it was called was a good cut on badmotorfinger.
when Nirvana chose Steve Albini to produce In Utero that was the intent....to kind of earn back some "street cred", as it were. don't get me wrong, Nevermind is a great hard "pop" record with really good songwriting.
there's always that pesky rumor that Dave Grohl had a lot stronger hand in the songwriting than was given credit for......

Yeah I'm sure you're right. I have found some recent music (post 1974) that I enjoy. However, when I sit down to select music (not just listen on the radio), I always return to the good old days. Perhaps it is just old age and my impending mortaility that pushes me in that direction. (Gee, that sounds pretty pathetic, oh well).
