View Full Version : I guess I lost my razor

What are the new good ones out there now?

I had a mach 3 for years, but I guess it's gone or something. I can't find it. It may have accidentally gotten into the trash.

I shave maybe once or twice a week. Usually Sunday morning and another random day throughout the 7.

Anyone that's gone to the fancy new 5 and 6 blade models notice a diff?

I was looking at this (http://www.knoxcigar.com/meshgo.html#top) kind of thing today and it seems like a lot of work, but that's what my grandpa used every single day. He had the brush and stuff and he always smelled kind a neat. Those safety razors are kind of spendy, and those blades look not quite Dean safe. Anyone use one of those?

And lastly. What about nasal snuff? Is that cool or what? If I was going to do nicotine, I'd definitely use that stuff.

are you talking about this stuff? You're not supposed to snort it like cocaine. Me & some buddies tried that snuff while at the drag strip in Noble and after watching us do it that way for a while an old timer walked up and called us idiots. He said that you are supposed to put it on a stick and then put the stick in your mouth. Anyhoo, snorting it gives you one helluva head rush and then your head feels like it's on fire. The next day the black boogers are the succ as well.

First of all, nasal snuff is not chew!

Few people in the Americas know anything about one of the oldest, and safest, forms of tobacco taking; one which is now gaining great popularity in the U.S. and Canada - Nasal Snuff.

Nasal snuff is a finely ground, flavored tobacco, taken in the non-offensive form of a simple sniff into the nostrils. Snuff began as the tobacco choice of royalty and the elite in 17th century Europe, before being provided to the masses. Still popular in Europe today, snuff is now gaining popularity in the Americas.

English nasal snuff is made with a wide variety of flavors, including spearmint, raspberry, apricot, lavender, bergamot, and Seville orange, to name just a few. The most popular use of snuff is to take just a pinch between you thumb and forefinger and sniff it lightly into the nose. This provides a pleasant aroma, lasting 15-20 minutes, as well as a noticeable nicotine lift. Many pipe smokers have also taken to the old English act of adding a sprinkle of their favorite snuff into their burning bowl of pipe tobacco for an added aroma, taste, and nicotine boost.

The Sheffield Exchange, Ltd. is the North American sole distributor of the world’s oldest, continually manufactured snuffs, Wilsons & Company of Sheffield, England.Wilsons also manufactures the renowned Fribourg & Treyer snuffs. These English snuff are still traditionally made, with the only ingredients being quality tobacco, natural fragrances, and water. Many German competitors add paraffin-based oils to their snuffs.

Because snuff is becoming so popular, many have questioned its health issues. Like any tobacco product there is a risk, but in 261 years of snuff making, Wilsons & Company has yet to have a single health case filed against them. According to Dr. Rodu, a leading pathologist studying cancer and tobacco, it’s the burning and inhaling of tobacco that creates most carcinogens. Many specialists feel that, for health reasons, if you are going to use tobacco, you are better off with a smokeless tobacco, like nasal snuff.

Nasal snuff is the shiznit. There's this German restaurant in Minneapolis (the name of which I can neither spell nor pronounce) where a barmaiden wanders around selling hits of it to the customers. You give the lady a couple of bucks and she pours the snuff into an indentation on some spring-loaded wooden contraption that shoots the snuff into your nose. Pretty cool.

When Ive lost my razor, I start by asking wifey if she has used it.
Usually, Im getting a new one out of the storage drawer before she can answer.

I dont understand you guys buying the expensive razors. Is it like buying a BMW or something? I buy Bic single blades for about $3 a pack of 15 or so. Lasts me about 4-5 months, even with my wife dipping in to get one now and then.

I got some blades for my mach 3 the other day and I hate it. It's too hard to get under my nose with it. When I use the Gillette Sensor Excel, I don't have that problem.

If I wasn't such a cheap bastard, i'd get a straight razor.

Don't use a product called "Beard Lube"

If you're shaving twice a week...the fusion might work well for you, just don't try to shave everyday with it.

And you would promptly slice your face open. Those are not for novices.

How can guys get by shaving twice a week? I have to everyday and twice on the days that I go out to dinner with the wife.

The best tip that I can give is to buy the Costco pack of disposables (I can't remember what model they are but there's like 40 in there for about $20-$25 and they have three blades I think) and always shave in the shower. Do it after your face has gotten nice and hot. Keep a can of shave cream in there and one of those fogless mirrors. Most comfortable shave ever and it doesn't matter if you have the fanciest, costliest razors and your standard, three blade model works great in that atmosphere. You will thank me.

Shaving in the shower is the way to go. I use these (http://hocks.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/3965977.jpg), they have two blades. I've never use a three or four blade razor, is it really better? To me they look like a cheese grater...

In order to become a pro you have to start out as a novice. The end result is better with a straight razor, so if you survive it would be worth it.

$15 for that little tube? What do you shave with, solid gold disposable razors with blades made of diamonds?

BeetDigger

I believe that is actually inexpensive compared to anything that you buy from the Art of Shaving. My .50 razors along with $2 shave cream works fine. I follow it up with a splash of Pinaud Lime and I am set.

I use one basically like this:

http://www.classicshaving.com/i/Merkur/500.jpg (http://www.classicshaving.com/catalog/item/522941/284028.htm)

I got the razor for free - my dad has a full beard and doesn't really shave. There's a bit of initial expense since I wound up buying a shaving mug and brush. But after that, a cake of shaving soap is about $5 and lasts you for months. Blades for this sort of razor cost you under 50 cents per week. Oh, and the shave is better than any shave I ever had with an electric OR a Mach 3.

Actually, if you buy a decent shave cream you can probably avoid paying for the mug and brush, too. Something like this:

http://www.classicshaving.com/i/Truefit_Hill/THtubs.jpg (http://www.classicshaving.com/catalog/item/522960/2982525.htm)

Personally, though, I'd go for the brush and maybe this:
http://www.shavingcream.com/images/products/presoap.jpg (http://www.shavingcream.com/item.php?id=360&cid=5)

You don't need a mug that way, and the metal tin is good for traveling. Plus it's one of th best shaving soaps you'll find.

they've usually got King of Shaves at Target in Norman for about 5 bucks a tube. i still use the same Atra II i got when i first started shaving. it's also made of steel and not plastic....the planned obsolesence people kind of screwed that one up. I've got an old safety razor like GHP posted above...and buying blades for that is cheapo city. like 2 bucks for 10 blades....i usually use it if i go too long without shaving. since it's single blade the space between blades doesn't get gunked up so you only get a couple shaves and then toss them....plus you can rinse the blades.

a good boars hair brush is a solid investment...though i don't think you need a mug. you can shave with a quality soap if you lather it up with a quality boar hair brush.

True, the difference between badger and boar hair brushes is that badger hair lathers better and holds water better, but boar is a bit stiffer, so it'll give your face a bit more of a wake-up before you shave.

Oh, and all the pics in my post above are links to places that sell this stuff at somewhat reasonable prices.
