Thought a new thread would be good for the finals.

Predictions? Thoughts? Matchup problems? Anyone hate the 2-3-2 as much as me?

I think Dirk will give the Heat fits. I also think Howard should guard Wade. Can't wait for Thursday.

Mavs in 6.

this will be the most physical series the mavs have had.........griffin will get some playing time against Wade as well as Howard....really wish we had DJ Mbenga to get some foul minutes against Shaq

i really have no idea how we match up, i just havent watched the Heat play enough to know

We've waited, in some cases, 26 years for this day to happen. And in doing so, have suffered through watching what arguably was the worst professional sports franchise in the 90's while watching our neighbors to the south in Houston and San Antonio battle for Western Conference and sometimes NBA supremacy.

Which would be analagous to your program's rise back to prominence after watching Florida and Auburn dominate for so long. ;)

dude, i remember when i was living here in high school....people went to Mavs games to watch the other teams when they came to town

this franchise has come A VERY LONG way, and frankly its Mark Cuban (imo) that brought us to the promised land.

we actually get a real banner to hang in the AAC now, hopefully we can add a bigger one with 4 more wins

No kidding. I remember being a little kid and getting excited cause the Bulls we're coming to town. Or looking at the sports page, and saying "Wow, the mavs won." Long time coming, and Cuban is the reason.

We won more games (227) in the last four years than we did in the 90's (206)

Anyone hate the 2-3-2 as much as me?

You can blame Larry and Magic for this. If I remember correctly, the 2-3-2 came about during the Boston-LA series in the 80's. It was a way to minimize the impact of traveling from coast to coast during the final four games of those series (which always seemed to go seven games - imagine that). It isn't really needed for series where the two teams are a three hour plane ride from each other.

It is part of Stern's grand plan of revenue enhancement/maximization. It allows him more time during the playoffs to manipulate player movement while working with TNT and ESPN broadcasting executives to ensure he gets the ad revenue algorithms optimized. He is busily working on his latest project - how to move Kevin Garnett to New Jersey as well as how to move a couple of the Clippers over to the Lakers. Next year, he will focus his attention on getting Carmelo Anthony to Boston and LeBron to the Knicks. And if you think this is 100% tongue in cheek, then you haven't paid attention to the NBA in the last 20 years.

Good game. Home court helped the Mavs weather the last surge from the Heat, and the little General's coaching is Pop-esque, as usual. Riley looked confused.

Mavs benefitted from a loosely-called game. Being able to hound Wade when he drove is what killed their offense. If they start calling fouls when he drives in, you guys are completely screwed. Personally, I think that's the way the NBA should always call it when guards drive. They know they're getting into the paint and risking getting bumped around. Don't call a foul just because there's contact. There's ALWAYS contact. J-Ho did not do as well against Wade as I thought he would.

Actually, that can be said about many of the finals from the last 10 years or so (ever since Jordan retired from the Bulls for the second time). I think that people tuned into the Shaq/Kobe Lakers championship series, but I am not sure that had as broad of appeal as some of the Bulls runs or the Lakers/Celtics runs.

To be fair though, I think that the same is true for baseball (especially when the Yankees are not in it) and in the NHL too. Football playoffs and the Superbowl always gets tons of viewers, but certain matchups do better than others.

In all honesty, we all watch too many sports. Instead of watching them, we should be out playing them. Our hearts would thank us. :D

Just to clarify my bet on SO about this series, I dont really care if Miami wins or not, I enjoy good basketball games. So far, Miami is not helping make it much of a game through the first two contests.
This is kinda reminding me of the finals where Orlando was playing Houston. I was a huge Orlando fan back then and the 4-0 sweep by Houston was very depressing. Oh, and Shaq was the starting center for Orlando back then as well. :(

I originally said Dallas in six.

After the first two here in Dallas, I wouldn't be the least surprised to see them win the next two to cap off the sweep.

In fact, if Dallas wins Tuesday, they'll sweep 'em on Thursday.

I think getting back to the home crowd and feeding off the energy of Gloria Estefan and thousands of screaming Cuban immigrants will probably inspire the Heat to play slightly less sucky. I've seen this six times with the Bulls...once you get to that middle third of the series where you're on the road, you can expect the home team to get at least one win.

Having said that, I agree with you. If we take Game 3, this thing's over in four. PREPARE TO RIOT, BITCHES!!! :D

That hasn't hurt the Mavs now that they are past San Antonio. :D

I think that Tim Colishaw did a pretty good job analyzing these two teams in his article over the weekend in the DMN and one of the points in his analysis really stood out: Dallas was over .700 against the west this year while Miami was about .500. The disparity was actually higher than that, but I can't remember the numbers exactly. Miami went through the playoffs beating teams, other than Detroit, that really struggled against the West. Given the records and who they have played, it really stood out that the best team from the West is much better than the best team from the East.

I gotta say that I was really wrong about the Mavs and their roster. I did not think that they could win in the playoffs using 10 and 11 men. Turns out, I was wrong. Avery generally only uses eight a game, but it tends to be a different eight depending upon the situation. The only three that get the same amount of time, regardless of the opponent are Dirk, Terry and Howard. Stackhouse plays the sixth man role regardless of the opponent too. Other than that, the minutes and mix are unique. You just don't see that type of system used in the playoffs. Most teams go seven, maybe eight players deep in the playoffs and it is the same players and about the same amount of time for them, other than injuries or foul trouble. Damp got no time vs. the Suns, yet is playing major minutes in this series and has been very effective, for example.

It's something he picked up with the Spurs, I think. It's just good coaching to have a contingency plan for all the different styles of play you'll see out there. That's why our series was so tight - we're basically the same team. :D You guys did to the Suns what we did to them last year, and it looks like you're handling the Heat the same way. Just remember last year's finals vs. the Pistons was two blowouts by us, two blowouts by them, then a three game series that was pretty close. Do not count your victories already. Scene - Mavs called for blocking.

HB - that is the toughest call in the NBA but as we slow it down, we see that the Mav was clearly not set and came up under Wade. It was a good call.

Scene - Heat go for block and knock Mav down

HB - As we slow it down, we see that the Mav got away with a push off there on the layup. It sounded worse than it was.

That said, Wade made that amazing rebound on the dirk FT miss by going over Stack's back. Couple of very questionable calls, but that will happen.

Spot on.

Wade is going to be more like Grant Hill than Michael Jordan in five years given his style of play.

Dallas needed to just shoot the ball a few times during that last six minutes. They would make the extra pass, the guy would catch it, juke the defender, move in closer to the bucket, get run on by another defender, make a pass, then start the whole process over again. It would end with a wild 30 footer as the buzzer sounded.

And not to point our the obvious, and it is difficult to fault a guy who is shooting 94% from the line in the series, but what a bad time for a miss from the line. That FT, in spite of all the bad that happened during the last six minutes, would have likely sent the game to OT. The Mavs chance in OT would have been better than average.

Wade misses practice, but says he'll play in Game 4

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/playoffs2006/news/story?id=2484003

MIAMI -- Heat guard Dwyane Wade didn't practice Wednesday because of a left knee injury he sustained in Game 3 of the NBA Finals, but said he would play when the series resumes Thursday.

Wade, who had 42 points in Miami's 98-96 win over Dallas in Game 3, was driven to a news conference on a small yellow flatbed vehicle Wednesday afternoon so he wouldn't have to hobble halfway around the arena. He said the knee was sore and swollen, but didn't elaborate on the extent of the injury.

Wade will undergo treatment Wednesday and until game time Thursday night. He said he didn't expect a painkilling injection, which he's taken in each of the last two playoff seasons for various maladies.

"Going to bed at night and waking up, it's very stiff and very sore," Wade said. "The only thing I can continue to do is what I'm ordered to do, and that's a lot of icing. I'm confident in my training staff that they will get me as close as I can be to 100 percent by tomorrow night. So you know, I'm hoping."

He was injured early in the third quarter of Tuesday's win. Wade was defending Dallas' Adrian Griffin at the top of the key, then dropped down to help Antoine Walker when Josh Howard had the ball in the corner.

Howard cut to the middle of the lane and charged into Shaquille O'Neal -- who fell backward, his left shoulder slamming into Wade's left knee and immediately causing the Heat guard to writhe in pain with 10:41 left in the third quarter.

"That's a lot of weight," Wade said.

And while he hobbled a bit at times, Wade was healthy enough to score 15 points in the final quarter, sparking Miami from a 13-point deficit in the final 6½ minutes to beat Dallas and close to 2-1 in the series.

"Dwyane was great to win the game for them," Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki said Wednesday. "Now it's a series. It's a dogfight."

heat up by 10

it started with the phantom foul on shaq (nothing new, the officiating sucks both ways).

heat up by 9

we then had a technical by payton and the second free throw

heat up by 7

jason williams then goes up and takes a quick 3 resulting in a fast break the other way. results in a 3 pointer.

heat up by 4

jason williams then throws the ball away at half court for a layup the other way

Pretty much. Haslem is a good asset when not in foul trouble, trick is keeping him that way, which has been rare lately. Jason Williams makes some dumbfounding attempts near the basket and is always good for a few turnovers that way. He and Wade both are pretty reliable in the turnover category really. I heard of wearing retro uniforms, but bringing back the 90's Mavericks to dress up as the '06 Mavs is just plain silly.

If they can't turn this around in the next nine minutes, it may be too much for their seemingly fragile psyche to handle. They've never recovered from blowing Game 3, and Miami knows that.

I don't understand the mindset of an NBA official.

I don't understand how Shaq can basically put his elbow in somebody's grill and shove and it not be called a foul.

If he got called for half the fouls he actually commits, Shaq would foul out of every game by halftime.

You can't let a game like that slip away. That said, the Mavs have yet to have a game comparable to about any of the games that they played against the Spurs or the Suns. The Heat claim "it's because of their defense". I think that the Mavs just have had three fair to good games followed by a real stinker. Mavs are due for a couple of good games.

Exactly. From my perspective, the games have been pretty decently refereed. There have been some missed calls both ways and a few judgement calls that have gone both ways. In slow motion, the refs appear to have gotten many of the calls right. The fouls were pretty even last night but the Heat had 12 more FT attempts. Also, they were WAY under their average in turnovers, which includes traveling calls and such. If anything, the Heat got more calls based upon the stats. But in reality, it looked like the game was pretty evenly called.

Game 3 was probably the worst officiated game of the series with the clock malfunctions and all the phantom calls that Jack Nies, Ken Maurer, and Danny Crawford made.

I have little complaints about how Game 4 was officiated. Especially when Dick Bavetta let it be known he won't be taking no lip from nobody.

I wouldn't say we were jobbed by the refs in Game 3. Though the refs did miss a few calls down the stretch, including a travel on Payton's shot that put Miami up 97-95.

My biggest complaint was about the timing malfunctions that went uncorrected. It's one thing when you miss a call. You can't go back during the next play stoppage and correct that. But when the whistle blows for a foul at 47 seconds and the clock is allowed to go down to 43 seconds, make the damn correction.

It's simply inexcuseable not to.

while in last nights game the refs did everything in their power to shut down Miami from halfway through the 3rd until halfway through the 4th quarter with every ticky tack call they could think of.

For the most part, I thought the slew of offensive foul calls that were made were legit.

I also thought they made the right call on Stack's flagrant foul on Shaq. And I think it would be completely ridiculous if that foul earned Stack a suspension.

The NBA has become a wuss league; i remember the good old days when you could knock the crap out of someone and not get suspended; remember the Kevin McHale clothesline of Kurt Rambis in 84? If that happened today, McHale would be gone from the league for good.

The end result is not nearly as important and the obvious intention as far as I can tell from the way the NBA has done stuff in the past.

David Robinson was knocked unconcious by Karl Malones elbow one time. Did Karl get suspended? Even though everybody knows Malone throws elbows and knees, he made it look accidental.

Stack didn't even try to disquise his intent.

Johnson moves Mavs from Miami hotel
By Marc Stein
ESPN.com

MIAMI -- Dallas Mavericks coach Avery Johnson has accused his team of falling into "a vacation mentality" ever since the NBA Finals moved from North Texas to the temptation-laden shores of South Beach.

"So I'm going to fix that," Johnson vowed.

How?

Johnson declined to reveal any specifics, but ESPN.com has learned that Step 1 was carried out before Johnson's lunchtime news conference Friday when the team moved from its downtown Miami hotel to a more remote location some 45 minutes away from AmericanAirlines Arena.

It's believed that the Mavs will be sequestered there until Sunday night's Game 5, except for a return trip to the AAA for practice and a mandatory media session Saturday.

"We just don't have the same focus that we've had throughout the playoffs," Johnson said of his Mavs, who have slipped from the verge of a 3-0 series lead into a 2-2 tie with the surging Heat after blowing a late 13-point lead in Game 3 and losing Thursday's Game 4 by a season-high 24 points.

"Again," Johnson said, "I'll take care of it."

I'd like to comment on what caused the suspension, but I've watched less than 3 minutes of the 4 games played so far. Besides, what injury is Wade going to come down with next? I'm sure his arm will fall off in the first half and he'll light up the Mavs for 20 in the second half after he has the trainers duct tape it back on.

Transcript from Avery Johnson interview

STAR-TELEGRAM STAFF

Selected excerpts from Avery Johnson’s comments on Randy Galloway’s radio show on ESPN 103.3/FM Friday afternoon:

Do you stand by your comments from earlier today in the press conference?

"This is what I call ridiculous. The league is so inconsistent. I’ve been holding my tongue all year about the foolishness, just the foolishness that goes on there. They’re so inconsistent. I’m just embarrassed to have to deal with some of the things that I have to deal with. Because we are in a position we have no authority and we’re always reminded of that, we’re just coaches. It’s just a bunch of bologna, for lack of a better word. It’s just sickening.
"Our fans should be upset, our players will be. Mark is just humiliated. All of the stuff that players do to our teams, we’ve seen worse. DJ Mbenga puts a hard foul, LeBron James’ headband goes off, he got suspended.
"If Shaquille O’Neal does the same thing, he gets a slap on the wrist, the same thing DJ Mbenga did. I’ve seen it before. It’s been around forever. Certain players get royal treatment, and certain players don’t."

Mavs owner Mark Cuban has a certain reputation within the league. Would something like this be because of that reputation in high places in the NBA?

"I would sure hope not. Mark has been an asset to the NBA ... he’s been great for the game. Maybe some of his ways have been unorthodox ...
"If there is some truth to that, I hope certain people can’t even look at themselves in the mirror because it would be a disgrace."

Does the NBA give you a description of what went on and why they handed down the suspension?

"They make the decision. Just like when Jason Terry got suspended; we didn’t find out until 4-5 o’clock the day before we were going to play the game after we practiced. We don’t have a voice. We find out stuff after the fact. No rebuttal, no trial and jury, it’s just a judge.
"We’ll get the explanation after the fact. [Assistant General Manager] Keith [Grant] may talk to the league; but at the end of the day, the decision is made.

What is the impact on your team from a basketball standpoint?

"We’ve been in situations where we’ve had to regroup all year. On a personal level, I’ve been in worse and I’ve seen worse. My job is to get the team ready to play no matter who’s in uniform. We’re losing Stack, but we’ll get DJ Mbenga back tomorrow, and that’s six more fouls. This is a very resilient team, a very focused team. I hope this makes them much more focused and the right type of anger."

Then suspend Shaq for some of his fouls in this series.

Or Haslem for his foul on Terry.

terry made that foul a heck of a lot worse than it should have been with the chicken wing down low. to be honest, he's lucky it didn't get called an offensive foul as the wipe away has been the one thing the NBA has consistently called for the last 20 years.

i don't particularly like shaq, but i give him a lot of leeway with hard fouls. he gets the ever loving crap beat out of him on a nightly basis and does so with very few complaints. if they called fouls for shaq like they did for duncan several years ago, there would be 3 opposing centers DQ'd in the first half.

GrapevineSooner
6/16/2006, 11:50 PM
To be fair,

I don't honestly think Shaq's elbow on Dirk or his foul on Stack in Game 1 warranted a suspension. Nor do I think Haslem deserves a suspension for his foul on Terry.

I just want some consistency out of the NBA. And I'm not getting it with ridiculous suspensions like this one. Stu Jackson stuck his nose into a situation it didn't belong. As a result, one of the participants in the Finals is stuck at a disadvantage they don't deserve.

And as a fan, I'd rather this thing be decided with both teams at full strength. I'd be saying the same thing if it were Haslem hard fouling Dirk in a similar manner.
