To be fair,

I don't honestly think Shaq's elbow on Dirk or his foul on Stack in Game 1 warranted a suspension. Nor do I think Haslem deserves a suspension for his foul on Terry.

I just want some consistency out of the NBA. And I'm not getting it with ridiculous suspensions like this one. Stu Jackson stuck his nose into a situation it didn't belong. As a result, one of the participants in the Finals is stuck at a disadvantage they don't deserve.

And as a fan, I'd rather this thing be decided with both teams at full strength. I'd be saying the same thing if it were Haslem hard fouling Dirk in a similar manner.

That's not on David Stern's agenda.

That's not on David Stern's agenda.

For a guy that runs a sport that consistenly is questioned, I wonder why Stern continues to do things that add to the conspiricy theorists? I question soccer, and for good reason given the Italian soccer league issues, the background of the ref in the US-Italy match (come'on, the dude has been questioned/convicted of conspiricy in the past?), but I don't watch soccer so it doesn't bother me. I watch (albeit not a lot) of the NBA and the sport just has me shaking my head.

probably because in the time Stern's been in charge, he's managed to gain absolute power.

I do not like that Crawford is the referee. Mavs are 1-13 in the Playoffs when he refs.

They are calling the game super tight so far.

Dirk missed two wide open looks already. I don't know what his deal is, but e better figure it out ASAP, or we'll get bounced, soon.

Mavs up by eight at the break.

Slight threadjack, but can ABC stop shoving those promos for that new fall series "The Nine" down our collective throats? It's bad enough having to endure the "Lost" promos, but at least I don't recall even "Lost" getting all this hype three months before its premiere. I hope "The Nine" goes the way of "Push, Nevada."
Just another reason to despise ABC and thank our lucky stars the BCS games (except the Rose Bowl) and Monday Night Football are no longer on that network.

Yeah, the flag guy was a little too over the top.
As much as I despised the Bulls during the MJ days, one of the best things they ever did was the pre-game introductions when Alan Parsons Project's "Sirius" played and Ray Clay announced the starters. No fireworks, no fire, no confetti, no special effects, just the lights going out and the snorting bull logo on the Jumbotron.

its been that way every game in Miami. Shaq can stiff arm a Mav but they can't even block Wade's shot cleanly without getting a foul.

That'a about a crock, but Wade and Shaq do go to the line a lot anyway. Avery Johnson did have a legitimate beef with Harris getting mugged (no call) and the call on the other end...I, too, absolutely hate the 2-3-2 format. It's like the league wants there to be game 7s for ratings and $$$.

I agree. I see no logical reason (other than money) that a team should have home-court advantage and be down 3-2 in the series if both teams protect their own court. I am in favor of the 2-2-1-1-1

Actually, it's Dan Crawford that the Mavs have that 1-13 record against.

But the way the refs have been sending the Heat on a parade to the free throw line, he might as well be officiating.

Dude, what the f*ck ever. I'm not a Mavs diehard, but I'm not a "bandwagon" either. I'm not crushed or angry that they lost, even though they got hosed by the spotty officiating in Miami. All I know is, you were a "witness" two rounds ago, then when the Cavs got bounced by the Pistons, you started humping the Heat to annoy Scott.

Besides, I'm just pointing out the idocy of you aggy-like "not a fan unless you live in the city and own season tickets" comment. There's no need for an incoherent, Morse Code-filled rant, slappy. :D

1. I think allowing a team to advance the ball by calling a timeout is possibly the worst rule ever. Who the hell came up with that one?

2. What was the point of Dallas starting to throw fouls on Shaq in OT? The ball was way out past the 3-point line - basically where it was going to be inbounded from - it wouldn't send Shaq to the line so he could clank a couple and give the ball back to Dallas... Basically all it did was get a couple of Mavs closer to fouling out and give the Heat time to organize an inbounds play. Why not save the fouls so the Heat wouldn't have been shooting by the end of OT?

3. Wasting that timeout at the end is right up there on the "stupidest plays ever" list.

I'm glad you're still rooting for the Marlins but I didn't have any sympathy when Mr. Blockbuster Video sold his players down the river after the '97 season or when your current owner did the same thing this offseason. He's really a footnote in Blockbuster history, he only owned the company for about 3-5 years before he sold it to Viacom long ago. Corporate offices moved back to the Dallas Area back in the late 90s after he'd sold it and Viacom relocated it for cost purposes. The original owners were based out of Dallas as well.

It was a bad call. It was one of those "he drove in with three guys on him and shot the ball and missed, so there must be a foul" calls.

I haven't gone through this whole thread to see if anyone commented on the timeout, but OMG the refs are stupid on that one. There was play stoppage, in OT of an NBA finals game. Miscommunication should not determine if a timeout is called. The refs need to go over to Avery and ask "do you want a timeout or not".

Oh, and memo to Josh Howard and the rest of the Mavs: Late in the game, when you are shooting foul shots - you should really, really, really make those.

Sadly the blame is on Howard and Avery. Avery was freaking out telling his team to take a timeout after the second one. Howard, obviously confused, called a timeout twice. He even started walking towards the bench signaling time out.

colleyvillesooner
6/19/2006, 08:55 AM
Man, even the next morning this sucks.

Dirk and J-Ho missing those FT's were massive. Howard's timeout was costly, but the Mavs probably miss a last second shot anyways.

Bottom line, and I'm talking to you Refs, the Mavs had better get ALL those calls at home. Oh, and we get it, Wade is a superstar. But he can miss and not be fouled. And he's not Jordan, so stop letting him get away with the left hand push off like MJ.

I really, really hate sounding like whiny Mavs fan, but everyone outside Miami see what is happening. The league needs a counterpart for Lebron the next decade, so welcome to the Top 5 Mr. Wade.

But that is a total miscommunication. To me, the refs need to get it right. There was play stoppage anyway so they are not giving an unfair advantage by verifying the intent. How many times do refs stop, gather together and confir to make sure that they get something correct? It happens relatively often I would say. So why don't they do the same thing in this instance? I'm not saying that it cost the Mavs the game. Just saying that it is too important, so make sure that they get it right.

They did gather together. Joe DeRosa called the timeout, met with "1-14" Crawford and they stuck with the call. Here's Crawford's quote: "Josh Howard goes to Joe DeRosa and not only once, but twice, asked for a timeout. Forced to call it, simple as that," crew chief Joe Crawford told a pool reporter.

Its like the NBA feels that they need Miami to win. They are a very marketable team with a superstar in Shaq and the next MJ... instead of the defensive minded team play of the Mavs (or Spurs or Detroit).

Other than that, not sure if it has already been said in this thread, but interesting stat of the game:
Wade 21-25 FT
THE ENTIRE MAVERICKS TEAM: 21-25 FT.

There is no way in the world one player should take as many FT as an entire team. Both were playing physical, but the discrepancy in the officiating was almost up there with (but not not quite) TTU-OU or USA-Italy.

Guys, Avery didn't want the timeout there. That he couldn't communicate effecively with Josh shouldn't be the reason for a mistake. I understand that if a guy calls it during play then it is called, period. Often times, and you see this frequently, a coach will yell to the refs and say "I want a time out if he makes the second free throw." It's like a placeholder. Its a copout what Crawford said. Let the players and coaches decide the game. If Crawford went over and asked Avery for the timeout and Avery said "Yes, I want it now" then there are no questions.

Dude, the Refs shouldn't have to do that. A player called timeout, twice. The ref can't be walking over to Avery saying "You sure you want to call that timeout coach? Most people wait until after the FT."

Everyone knows Avery didn't want the timeout there. The refs did the right thing, in that instance.

Cuban's blog from today. :D

http://www.blogmaverick.com/

When I was a kid, one of my favorite comedy routines was George Carlin’s Seven Dirty Words.

Words, words, words. My friends and I couldnt get away with cursing so we made up our own language. From the basic, like, Sugar Honey Ice Tea. to, HE double hockey sticks (for those old enough to remember when using the word Hell was considered cursing) to more advanced words for more advanced cursing. This way we could curse in front of parents, teachers, whoever. The intent was the same, but no one knew we were cursing !

I remember thinking back then, that our culture was evolving quickly enough that some day we all would realize the ridiculousness of everyone deciding together to be offended by those seven words. Typical thinking for an 11 year old, right ?

The good news is we didnt.

Now anyone in America can get a rise out of people by using most of Carlin’s 7 Dirty Words. I know I get a rise out of my wife. I cant think of anything funnier than a 3 year old cursing. I mean come on, does it really matter if we say Poo Poo or **** ? Of course not. Unless of course your married and your wife tells you it matters. She doesnt want to be the one who gets phone calls from teachers and other parents getting blamed for all the 3 year olds in the little gym class screaming “Kiss My *** you Mo Fo”... Me, i couldnt think of anything i would rather see and hear. but thats me.

Back to the point here. I like to curse. I like to curse because I enjoy how it gets everyone in an uproar. I wont curse in an environment where I have accepted an invitation or am a guest of someone else. I will play by their rules.

But if you come on my home turf and want something from me. Its my rules.

Last night in the locker room after we lost in overtime to the heat. I was asked by reporters to answer some questions. I told them i would if they asked good questions and didnt ask the same cliche’d questions they had asked after other games. It was interesting how quiet everyone got.

then someone asked “Is this your worst loss ever” . What the **** kind of question is that ? Is this for a VH1 special ? “Worst Losses Ever ?” If it was, then maybe it was a decent question. Otherwise, how do you answer that question…

Let me think. Well we have never been to the finals before, and this is our most recent finals lost. The 3rd in a row. So that could make it the Mavs worst ever. There was a baseball game I played in where I hit the ball into the gap and some guy made a diving catch to end the game instead of me driving in the winning runs and winning the tournament. I cried in the dugout after that one. There have been some tough rugby losses. Am I supposed to get this reporter a thought out answer and catalog my past, or a catalog answer like “this was a tough one… yadda yadda, that sounds like every other answer ever given to this type of question after a lost game.

The reality is that it would be a waste of both of our time if i gave him the “this was a tough one” answer, and a waste of my time to really think about it. Particularly given there were 10 other reporters wanting to ask questions and we had a bus to catch

So I told the reporter to “Ask me a real ****ing question”

Apparently some folks have taken exception to me cursing in my response. Well in this case, the reporter was using my time, we were in a locker room and I was trying to provide a response that had no value to me, but could only help him. If he doesnt think enough of either of our time to invest the brainpower and minutes it takes to come up with something different than has been asked a thousand times.

**** em.

They talked about that on the Ticket this morning. They read the rules, and the rule read that basically you can inbound into the backcourt under two minutes. But the rule didn't say anything about being established in the front courts, then going into the backcourt.

My understanding was that you can catch it in the backcourt, but you can't catch it in the front court and land in the backcourt.

Once you are established in the front court, you can't go backcourt with both feet and the ball; i do believe there is a way you can do it as long as one foot or the ball stays in the frontcourt, but i haven't seen that in so long i don't remember how it works

BeetDigger

They have not called double dribble on Wade a couple of times too. On steals he knocks the ball away down in a dribbling motion. Then, as he retrieves the ball, he grabs it and then starts dribbling again. But it is on a breakaway and it would take away a highlight reel dunk, so the refs look the other way on that one.

Hey remember when Dirk got a free throw from a foul that Bowen did not commit to send the game to overtime?

Yes I remember. It was a ticky tack call.

Difference is...

1. those two free throws sent the game to OT.

2. The foul occurred on the floor with about 8 seconds left. So it's not outside the realm of expectation that Dirk could have tied the game with an ol' fashioned bucket from the field or even kicked it out for a three to
win it at the end.

3. Because there were 8 seconds left, Timmy still had a legitimate chance to win it in regulation with the final shot. I realize that Jos Howard really put the Mavs in a bind with his brain cramp. But even with the benefit of getting to inbound the ball from mid-court, having 1.9 seconds left on the clock means you have significantly less time than 7 or 8 seconds left.

4. I don't recall Dallas shooting 24 more free throws than the Spurs in that game.

They just had a retired NBA Ref on The Ticket. Mike Mathis, a ref for 21 years, and reffed in 12 Finals. His major beef with Game 5 was allowing the game to be affected by a technicality (the Howard TO) and a foul on Wade that "nobody was completely sure about, and the shooter was out of control." He basically said Refs aren't trained enough. I think he's wrong about the timeout situation though, they had to call it.

He also said Cuban is so close to knowing what goes on inside the NBA office it's scary. :D

To be fair, his son works for the Mavericks as a video technician.

And while I understand his point about giving some leeway on the timeout call, the onus still lies with Josh Howard on that play to actually wait until the second foul shot goes down.

From the Associated Press ...

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban was fined $250,000 by the NBA on Tuesday for his outbursts following Game 5 of the NBA Finals.

Cuban was cited for “several acts of misconduct” after Dallas lost 101-100 in overtime to the Heat in Miami on Sunday night.

Upset with some calls that he felt went against the Mavericks, Cuban went onto the floor after the game to vent at official Joe DeRosa. He then stared down and screamed toward commissioner David Stern and a group of league officials, from the court, then the stands.

He later used profanity during a postgame session with the media.

colleyvillesooner

Greatness:

"Apparently The Miami Herald is reporting I screamed at the NBA commissioner after the game the other night," Cuban wrote Tuesday. "Didn't happen. Didn't say a word to the man. Not a single word. And that was absolutely by intention."

"Apparently this 'reporter' [writer Greg Cote] has written he has several 'sources.' Well they must be the same sources the tabloids use to find two-headed babys and aliens, because it didn't happen."

Seems like biased advertising to me, and I'm not a fan of either team.

Did you grab that out of the DMN? I saw it at lunch time and was going to bring it in and post the stats.

I believe that teams will change their strategies from series to series and between the playoffs and the regular season. So that will account for some deviations in numbers. However, how much of a deviation is the question?

Game 5 will always stand out as an anomilie. How a team can lose when they win the rebounding battle, shoot a higher percentage from the field and shoot 84% (on 25 attempts, which is pretty close to their season average) from the line?

I have a hard time with people who say that the Mavs lost it because they didn't make their free throws at the end (and I know that I gave Howard a hard time for missing). Well, FT's at the beggining count the same as at the end of the game and beyond that, they are saying that the Mavs have to nearly shoot 100% from the line to win a game. I am sure that Avery could have them practice their FT's some more, but not sure how much improvement one can expect from 84%.
