i rec'd about 20 return to sender emails today from my gmail account. upon inspection, the originator appears to be (example)
[email protected] - which isn't me.
anyone else had the same issue? how serious of a security issue, if any, is this to me?

Welcome to email. Anyone anywhere can spoof the sender.
Let's put it this way -- it's a security issue, and a big part of why spam is so difficult to deal with, but there is absolutely nothing you can do about it.

Yeah, I get spammed by
[email protected] all the time. I usually just respond "Unsubscribe".
