I just hooked up my computer here in Wichita and the internet is working fine, but Outlook won't let me send emails. I keep getting emails from "System Administrator" that look like this:
Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.
Subject: anything
Sent: 5/26/2006 12:29 PM (or whenever)
The following recipient(s) could not be reached:
whoever on 5/26/2006 12:29 PM
550 relaying mail to swbell.net(or to ou.edu or ANYTHING) is not allowed
any ideas what the problem is?

you need to change your smtp server. if you have cox at home, it won't let you send out from a different server.

What e-mail servers are you using? You can't send anything to the OU SMTP server from an outside IP address, and many other ISP's set up their e-mail servers the same way.

you'll need to switch in the information of the isp you are using for the university information.

okay, how do I do that?
The easiest thing will be to use SMTP server of whatever ISP you're connected to right now--but you might need a user name and password for it. The easiest easiest thing to do will be to use web mail until you get back home.

550 No such user here when sending from Outlook 2003
If you're getting the error 550 No such user here when you're trying to send out email on the Smartermail server using Outlook 2003, please goto 'More settings' buttoon and click the 'Outgoing Server' Tab and make sure you have 'My outgoing (SMTP) server requires authentication' checked. That will fix the issue.
this doesn't sound like your exact error, but...

try "mail" as the SMTP server, lots of times the isp will alias it to work
you could also use OU's SMTP if you use the VPN client
if you PM'ed me your IP address i can find the ISP and their SMTP server for you, if you want

this isn't entirely true. all my email does go through one of the OU smtp servers from fermilab.
but the one I use is the physics department server, which does things a little bit different.

No kidding. There's the problem. Try again when the internet makes it to Wichita.

You do realize that if you send it to "whoever", it's not going to know where the email should be sent right? ywia.

This is a bit late, but remember - this is a girl who, despite her Mensa status, made ME unhook all the cords and cables from her computer so she could take it home. Because apparently unplugging cords and stuffing them in a plastic bag was too complicated. ;)

HEY! I plugged them all back in by myself and the computer works just fine!
