So, I am in Edmonton, Alberta on business. The Oilers are playing tonight and if they win they go to the Stanley cup.

This feels like Norman before the Nebraska game in 2000. People are just giddy.

they're Canadian, I don't think you can call them 'giddy' anymore.

Nah, gotta fly outta this place at 6am tomorrow.

Did walk around downtown calgary for about an hour tuesday, where they deal drugs out in the open by Chinatown.

Its amazing to see all the homeless teens around these parts.

Edmonton = OKC, except with lots more oil jobs and a really big *** shopping mall (largest in the world).

How's the weather up there?
I had heard they had a big-time mall, but I didn't think nothing could top the Mall of America in Minnesota.

The weather is really wierd. It was 65 yesterday, and about 30 today and was snowing for bit. It was 90 last week.

The sun doesn't set until about 10:30 either.

But that mall is about the size of Disney land, it has its own lands, an indoor amusment park with a big *** rollercoaster and bungee jumping, and water park, hockey rink, aquarium, deepocean adventure with dolpins and otters and stuff (has a submarine ride), and pirate ship.

Best of all, its all free. Cool stuff.

Edmonton West (I think that's the name of it. ) was built several years before Mall of America and is indeed substantially larger.

If the Oilers win tonight, head out to the streets and watch for the topless women. It's kind of a Canadian tradition to flash the tittays when your team wins. (Which is why it really sucks to be a Leaf fan).

No, not exactly. You have to pay to ride the rides at Galaxyland (saw where an all day ride pass goes for $26.95).

It was traveling day, no work is to be done on traveling day.

And I am stuck in a meeting right now, looking like I am busy doing something important.

South China Mall Dongguan, China
2005
7.1-million
9.6-million
1,500
Currently the largest shopping mall in the world, but it will soon be eclipsed by at least two other Chinese malls.

Dubai needs to just make the whole damn country indoors and air conditioned. Would be a big improvement.

No. My wife (who spent about half of her childhood in Canada) rants about it to this day. Constantly.

... and she's more of a Habs fan.

Remember though, the Oilers did win a cup without The Great One. (Doesn't quite compare to the 4 they won while he was there though).

Mostly, it ****es her off because it signaled the downfall of a whole slew of Canadian franchises; once Gretzsky went south, the player's salaries started skyrocketing and because of the economic disparity, the clubs in Canada couldn't compete except for the *very* largest markets (ie, Toronto and Montreal).

She's especially bitter about the clubs having to leave Canada -- the Nordiques and especially the Jets because of the huge efforts of Winnipeg to keep them there.

(Truthfully, her allegiance is to the Canadian teams more than anything -- the Habs got the edge because she was a huge huge HUGE Patrick Roy fan. Me, I'm a Leafs guy.)

she is aware that with the exception of the occasional playoff game Winterpeg's nasty *** barn was mostly empty....Then again, it was wrong to play hockey anywhere that had that large a picture of Queen Elizabeth on the wall in the main area.

I wonder how she handled the Habs trading Patrick Roy to the Avalanche?

Vaevictis

shrug, the story as I'm told is that the arena may have been empty, but the seats were still sold.

OTOH, my wife is more a creature of emotion than logic, so who knows.

She wasn't exactly thrilled about that, but it didn't effect her cheering for him. Essentially she wanted any Canadian team to win the cup, and failing that, the Avalanche, and failing that, ANY team before the Kings and Rangers, and failing that, Kings before the Rangers.

She hates the Rangers with a burning passion I have rarely seen equaled in anyone for any reason.

From my sources in Winnipeg the 3 seasons prior to them moving, the seats went unsold unless it was the usual corporate purchases. Unfortunately she ties too many emotions to former WHA franchises.

And that is a damn shame. When you think of the players they had on that team, there was no reason that they couldn't sell seats in that place.

Mind you, Winnipeg in the middle of winter is incredibly cold. Who the hell wants to go out when the windchill is below minus 50?
