My wife's former boss is coming through town tonight and we're taking him to dinner. What are some of the better restaurants in town that aren't chain/brinker stuff?

They like the more sit down nice places over the pepe delgado stuff.

Norman: Tarahumara's; Legends

South OKC: Pearl's on I-240; Dot Wo on SW 89th and Penn; Ted's on SW 85th and Western

Stockyards: Cattleman's

Wasn't "not Moore" a redundancy?

(Sorry SBSB!)

Thanks for the suggestions. I should mention that they're coming from Houston. They'd probably laugh at any of the Mexican food joints up here.

Legends used to be back in the day. Glad to see it still makes the reference list.

I would take them to Cattlemen's. It's legendary in Oklahoma.

If they do, just laugh at their crime rate and lengthy commute times. That'll show 'em.

(Sorry SBSB!)Don't be sorry. Moore is just now getting to where we have decent places to eat within the city limits. I can see where it would be a beatch to go there if you didn't live there though. I hate I-35 and avoid it at all costs.

Well, I AM a fellow Moore-on. ;)

Long ago there was a good steakhouse called Cross Timbers in the vicinty of Indan Hills Road.

Oh - seriously - My cousin's son is a chef at a German (I think) restaurant in that same Indian Hills Rd area. But I can't remember what it's called. Anybody know what I'm talking about?

OK, Beano: Royal Bavaria

Italian: Bevenuti's in Norman is brand new (across the street from Coach's) and you can show them the James Garner statute across the street. There is also the new Othello's where Pearl's used to be.
Thai: New place also on the north side of Main St in Norman, but can't remember the name.

PAD THAI for thai food. not the damn place on main st.

Sweet Basil on Main isn't bad... but Pad Thai is better, i think

there is a bigger one at 89th and Penn

Definately Legends or Cattleman's. If you want to go some where really pimp then go to Mantel's but its hella expensive.

Go to Benvenuti's for the Italian. It kicks Othello's bottom and you don't have to deal with the sociopath bar manager they have.

Don't go to Cattleman's. I brings over-rated to a whole 'nother level.

Go somewhere in Bricktown. Other than that I love to wear crocs in my bar and grill place. Mickey Mantle's or Bourbon Street or something. Then, you've go the whole Bricktown atmosphere. There's a lot of good places to go.

It's only a few minutes north of South OKC.

Sooner Born Sooner Bred
5/25/2006, 03:34 PM
Normally I would agree with the Bricktown suggestion, but with the baseball tourney down there, it's sure to be a mad house.

On second thought, go to Mickey's and get valet parking.

Taxman71
5/25/2006, 03:35 PM
If you don't mind dropping nearly $50 per person, Nonna's (across the street from the Brick) is the nicest place in town. You can eat in the formal dining room or the Purple Bar upstairs. They valet for $5. Mickey Mantle's Steakhouse is very good as is the Mantle for Italian.

Victoria's is my personal favorite for italian in Norman, but it is not really a "full-service" place.

The Vista.

Get wings, a pitcher or two and stomp their a*s at NTN.

5/25/2006, 03:45 PM
If you want to stay in Nompton, there's a new place where the old Interurban was on Main. It's called Benvenuti's. Very nice place. Italian influenced food.

If you go to Bricktown, The Mantel is the place to go for dinner w/o worrying about the crowds. Nonna's, while good, is a lot of hype.

Take em to Jersey Mike's for some subs. Cheap and good.

I only go to IH with the 2-for-1 coupon (excludes weekends). Do they still have that? If not, it is overpriced. And Outback ain't near good enough to wait 2 hours for. You could drive to Ken's in Amber, eat real steak and ribs and get back to Norman before you could finish your bloomin' onion.

Norm In Norman
5/25/2006, 03:55 PM
Oh, Misal was a good choice if they are up to eating Indian food. Abner's at 12th and alameda is good too and they have a good mix of different stuff. It's not extremely nice but it's no dive.

I've never thought of it, but most of the good places I go to aren't very nice. I think in general in Oklahoma more expensive = good atmosphere and not good food. The best tacos I've had are from a dive (Tacos san pedro). The best burger I've had was from something that isn't even as good as a dive (Nic's). Then there is the greek house. Good BBQ usually means dive or roadside trailer.

Drive to Purcell and get a chicken fried steak from Kendall's. Isn't it in Purcell now? They'll never get a CFS that is that good.

I think they have one back in Noble now, too. It's on whatever main street 'downtown' is on, I think. Broadway, Main, or whatever it's called.

Since they are from Houston, you can really pi$$ them off by suggesting some good nawlins' food at Bourbon Street Grill. They can get reminded of all the fine transplants occupying their city.

IF you want to drop some serious coin, The Haunted House (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-2738592-haunted_house_restaurant_oklahoma_city-i) is by MLK and I-40. Incredible steak and a really cool atmosphere. With drinks, it'll run upwards of $50/person. Well worth it. My favorite in OKC. If not, another vote for Charleston's.

Agree with Norm re: Indian Hills. I think it's gone way downhill; it used to be nice but it's ghetto now.

I'd second Legends, it's not spectactular but it's pretty good and a nice place to go eat.

Bourbon Street Grill is awesome (Blackened ribeye, mmmmm) but they need to frickin invest in an air conditioner. Don't go there if it's hot outside.

Okay, Royal Bavaria - I havent been there yet since it re-opened but I personally know the guy who runs it now, and he is a badass German cook and an equally good restaurant manager. He comes from a big family of badass German cooks. He's fresh off-the-boat too so you know it's authentic ;) Go there, you probably wont be disappointed.

What about Louie's in Brookhaven plaza? I havent been there. Danny's (the joint it replaced) was the most overpriced piece of crap ever.

I think Louie's is still struggling to decide whether it is a bar or a restaurant, like a nicer version of Champions. Nothing is more aggravating than waiting for a table when over half the people have been nursing Bud Lights for 2 hours watching a game. Food is good though.

Do not rip the lasagne rolls or cracked pepper linguini.

Actually, the last time I ate at the Olive Garden (after many many years) it was very good both in terms of food quality and atmosphere.
