The Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha. http://www.omahazoo.com/ I'm going with my Mom and 9yr old Cousin because I want to spend time with my family before I move far away in all likelyhood in a year, and the zoo is pretty sweet. In all seriousness, if your ever in Omaha checking out the zoo is a must. It's well worth your time.

Has the Sedgewick County Zoo ever been voted the best Zoo in America like the Henry Doorly has?

That was't on my ballot. Must have been an independent thing.:)

Omaha has hills too. It's on the Missouri River, that gives it bluffs. Nebraska doesn't flatten out till Lincoln.

I always thought the San Diego zoo was the best.
But Tulsa's is pretty good. I'm taking my sister next week.

Man, the things you find digging through the posts you missed while spending 4 days in San Diego.

OK, the results of my up close and personal comparison:

The San Diego Zoo rocks, but some of the exhibits at the Sedgwick County zoo are actually better. Granted, San Diego is about 4 times the size of Sedgwick county, but I would say SC's (I hate that abbreviation - I will now refer to it as Wichita) gorilla exhibit in particular is way better - larger apes in greater numbers with enough room to actually function as a community. I expect that's what happens when Jane Goodall help design it.

In summary - S.D. is huge, and has a way larger variety of animal than you get in Wichita (most notably koalas, pandas, polar bears, sea lions, etc.) but the individual exhibits in Wichita are larger and designed to show off a population in a native-type environment, not just one or two animals in a small habitat. If you want that sort of thing in S.D. you have to drive 30 miles north to their Wild Animal Park. I didn't have a car and an extra day so I didn't go see that park.

Really the two zoos are fairly comparable - Wichita could easily be a part carved out of San Digo's zoo.
