View Full Version : My neighbors HUGE orange trumpet vine...

MamaMia

...is fastly creeping under my cedar fence. I have tried digging it out of my garden up but its winning the war. It has already killed one of my antique rose bushes and two dainty whispering angelicas. Now its working on killing a second rose bush, only this time its my prized 'sterling' that I entered into the garden club and won a Blue Ribbon for. :(

This is what the monster looks like...

You can always "accidentally" dump a bottle of roundup over the fence...

step 1 - get can of diesel
step 2 - pour over fence on vine

Did I mention that the vine has climbed all the way up a 10 foot pole of theres that has a bird house on it, which is about 8 feet from my fence?

a little roundup on your own side of the fence goes a long way.

Thats what I was thinking. Doesn't round up go from the leaves into the main part of the plant? Sorry but my yard is MY yard.:texan:

Yeah, I was thinking pull the vine away from your plants and hit it with Roundup. It'll probably take out half the vine.

I cant put roundup on my side of the fence. My garden is there.

Since the plant is so far away from my fence I 'll need help. I suppose I could get one of those water bazookas, fill it with roundup, and then in the middle of the night have my friend Ethel hold a flash light on it while I stand on a crate and shoot.

Trumpet Vine is pretty hardy, it would probably take at least 2 applications of round-up to kill it off.

I say do it.

That's your basic Trumpet Creeper. We had a couple in our yard....I took them out when they started ruining our fence. I dug them up but they still sprout from the ground every once in a while, but I just mow them over. Apparently, they're REALLY hard to kill.

Round Up is your best bet if you're not afraid of ****ing off your neighbor. I seem to remember Mrs Mj saying to spray it our put some in a tiny cup and somehow put on the end of one of the vines. Supposedly, it will drink it up and will make its way to the roots. Good luck.

When it was me complaining about the nighbor's dog, everyone said go talk to the neighbor and leave the dog alone. My how the tune changes when it's a Orange Trumpet vine. :D

You can paint the roundup on the leaves with a craft paintbrush, just be careful around your plants.

i'm w/ him ... if you just spray that (on your side) ... it should still make it to the roots ... hell you did nothing wrong ... if they are not accountable for what their plant distroyed ... you're not for taking care of yours ... it's on your property ... all you did was spray on your property ... they can't say a word :D

From a farm supply store friend, "Roundup works best if applied directly to several of the leaves in the morning when the temperature is at least 80 degrees." If you don't want to risk spraying near your roses, just apply the liquid directly to the leaves of the offending plant. Make a "lollipop" of a cotton rag tied around the end of a stick. Soak the cotton in Roundup and dab it on as many trumpet vine leaves as possible.

If the leaves haven't encroached onto your side, is it possible to just sever the roots at the fenceline with a spade? You may then be able to insert an underground barrier like garden edging to keep them from coming to visit you.

Mom,

Round-up only kills what it is directly sprayed on. It won't work if it gets on the soil, etc. It must contact leafty growth (during the growing season) to do it's deed. And if you're gonna do it, don't buy that crap they sell at Walmart. Go to the local feed store and ask for Eraser, Buccaneer, or any other "round-up" with a 51% whateverthehellitisinroundupthatkills.

The "good" stuff usually takes a couple days to start working, and a full week or more before stuff really starts looking dead. You can spray the bejeezus out of the plant, and head out of town on vacation. When you come home, and the neighbor is whining about his dead garden you have an alibi.

Haha! Well, the 1st 2 months I wasnt really here. The place sat here. I was in a trailer (NOT FEMA, that's another story) till Christmas. Then really started rebuilding January. Got cabinets and a little more trimwork left to do.

Been in an F1 tornado, and lookin for a place without em. OK is nice, but I'd have to have an underground bunker or something.
