So like a fool, I renewed my Norton Internet Security for another year, and it's never installed properly. So I followed the un-install steps and thought that would take care of it. Nope, it was still there.

So I used the search function, found every folder with Norton in it, and deleted them... save for two folders that I can't even throw away in safe mode. If anyone has any tips for helping me get rid of this bastage program before I have to resort to re-formatting the drive, please help. I've learned my lesson, and will never install it again.

only if its 2003 or earlier
Download the RnisUPG.exe file to the Windows desktop.
On the Windows desktop double-click RnisUPG.exe to run the file. This file removes Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall from your computer.
Restart the computer when prompted.

Norton is pure evil ram/cpu killing piece of ddooo!

After you kill it, install sygate and avg. They're both free and much better at not breaking your freaking machine I hate Norton freaking stupid program.

s.t.e.p.'s download trick worked - it's all gone, and my nightmare is over. I've got my firewall on, and my spyware program running. Now all I need is a good anti-virus program.

After trying Norton, McAfee, Panda, and a few freeware antivirus programs, I have finally found Trend Micro's PC-Cillin to be an affordable and very effective solution. It contains antivirus, firewall, antispam, and antiphishing capabilities. You can turn each function on/off separately. It updates itself in real time, and you can schedule regular scans to occur at a time you specify. I have rarely needed support, but when I have, Trend Micro provides it for free and -- no small advantage -- through people who actually speak English.

I've always been a little leery of freeware programs because you never know how long they're going to be around and supported. YMMV.

AVG is free for personal use, so it's not really freeware, exactly

it kinda bogs down your machine during scans, and is a little harder than other things to configure, but the price is right

Now I'm going to have to try and remember what that other free one I used to use was.
