I had no idea the USS Oklahoma was the only ship sunk at Pearl Harbor that didn't have a memorial.

USS Oklahoma Memorial fund drive kicked off

OKLAHOMA CITY A Navy veteran who survived the Japanese attack on the U-S-S Oklahoma in Pearl Harbor in 1941 attended a ceremony today to kick off a fundraising drive for a new memorial for the battleship.

Ed Vezey was an ensign aboard the ship and was sitting in his bunk when the attack came without warning.

Governor Brad Henry and other officials today kicked off a 750-thousand-dollar fundraising drive for a memorial on Ford Island near where the ship sank.

Of the nine battleships in Pearl Harbor, the U-S-S Oklahoma had the second highest loss of life, but is the only ship not to have a permanent memorial. Four-hundred-29 people lost their lives.

The memorial is scheduled to be dedicated in 2007, the state's 100th birthday.

On a side note, work has started on the base at the new site for the anchor that was previously in front of the Skirvin Hotel downtown.

The anchor and granite have just been laying in the grass at the new site near 13th and Broadway, but should get put up in the not too distant future.

I don't think they had to worry about anyone taking it away, since it ways like 20 kajillion pounds and stuff. :)

We should give some lottery money for this.

What about an Oklahoma Memorial Scratch-off ticket?

I always thought it was strange that the U.S.S. Utah had a memorial but the Oklahoma didn't.
