Oklahoma State basketball coach Eddie Sutton will retire this afternoon at a 3 p.m. ET press conference in Stillwater, ESPN has learned.

He will be replaced by his son, Sean Sutton, who has been head coach designate for the past several seasons.

Eddie Sutton coached OSU for 16 seasons. He also coached at Creighton, Arkansas and Kentucky. He was the first coach to take four different schools to the NCAA Tournament. He has coached in 3 Final Fours.

Sutton pleaded no contest May 5 to drunken driving charges for a traffic accident in which his SUV swerved, collided with another vehicle and then hit a tree.

Sutton, who underwent treatment for alcoholism at the Betty Ford Center in 1987 while he was coach at Kentucky, has said lingering back pain was a factor in his relapse.

"The pain at times literally has been unbearable. ... The pain was so bad that I took a lot of pain pills, but that didn't seem to work, so I succumbed to temptation and went and bought a bottle," Sutton said in a news conference five days after the accident.

Court records showed his blood alcohol concentration was 0.22, almost three times the legal limit.

Since the accident, Sutton has undergone surgery to relieve back and hip pain brought on by a pair of spills two years ago and he also went through a five-week inpatient alcohol treatment program.

Only Dean Smith (879), Adolph Rupp (876), Bob Knight (869) and Jim Phelan (830) have more career wins than Sutton.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Basketball was taking too much of his drinking time, I understand.

Aggy will dedicate their next two wins to him so he gets to 800. (It's the kids he recruited, so it counts)

Of course, that's assuming they win two more games.

Ever.

Let's all raise our glasses for the great Eddie.

Then let's go stumble in the parking lot, get campus cops to put us in the front seat and crash our cars.

*sniff* I'll miss you, Eddie.

"For too long now, the pressure of coaching major college basketball has caused undue stress on me and shone an unfair spotlight on my personal life," Sutton said in a statement today. "Now that I've put my epic, yet championship-free career into the record books, I look forward to my new life as a private drunk."

Godspeed, Boozy McCrashalot.

That's right.

Instead, we should remember the way the MIDDLE-AGED drunk totaled Kentucky.

i'm not nearly as anti-eddie as most of you....but ****ing on the wall of a school is more memorable to me (even though i know the bigger issue is endangering the lives of others). a lot of people make bad, dangerous, and irresponsible decisions to drive drunk.....i have. but, ****ing on the side of a school is just off the map.

FYI - Clint and Jackie shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentance.

Jackie Chan and Steven Segal, well that's okay.
